Wind and solar determine the future with infrastructure projects – also a logistical challenge

The future of wind and solar is infrastructure projects

The wind and solar energy sectors are booming worldwide as infrastructure projects are commissioned and countries set ambitious targets for carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions in the coming decades. New data shows that these two popular renewable energy sources will overtake traditional fossil fuels in just five years.

At the same time, this also presents a logistical challenge. Many companies in the wind and solar need to optimize their processes along their supply chains – the supply chain must be designed to be more forward-looking and digital in order to meet future demands.

Suitable for:

to a new report by the International Energy Agency, the current global electricity generation capacity from wind and solar power will double by 2025, reaching almost 2,400 gigawatts. This would surpass both the global coal and natural gas capacities, which are projected to reach around 2,100 and 2,000 gigawatts respectively by 2025. Based on the latest data from 2019, the combined capacity of coal and natural gas is more than three times that of the world's wind and solar power capacity.

Traditional fuels like coal and natural gas lost significant value in 2020, driven by a collapse in global demand due to COVID-19 restrictions. Coal, which was already trending downwards at the beginning of the year, was hit hardest by the worldwide drop in electricity consumption. Most countries are rapidly phasing out the coal industry, turning instead to wind, solar, and natural gas, and it shouldn't be long before coal officially disappears from most major power grids.

Wind and solar energy, on the other hand, are rapidly filling the gap left by coal. Both sectors are experiencing tremendous growth, even during the pandemic, and the ongoing news about carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions plans in countries around the world is only accelerating their adoption.
