But behind this clever PR move for a model that can demonstrably solve complex problems completely autonomously for days on end lies a hard-nosed economic and geopolitical strategy. This article offers a deep dive into the Chinese-American AI race, aggressive open-source tactics, and the pressing question of whether rapid technological progress will ultimately lead us to a life of leisure or unemployment.

The narrative of threat is transformed into a promise of more leisure time. This rhetorical device deserves closer economic examination, as it touches upon one of the central questions of our time: how technological progress affects work, prosperity, and social distribution.

At the same time, Alibaba released Qwen3.8-Max, a model that, according to the company, can compete with the top products of its US competitors and even outperforms its domestic rival, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, in several benchmarks. The model boasts 2.4 trillion parameters, is based on a mixture-of-experts architecture, and, according to the company, is the first model in Alibaba's portfolio to surpass the one trillion parameter mark in a natively multimodal form. Particularly noteworthy is its claimed ability to operate completely autonomously for several days without human supervision, a feature previously attributed almost exclusively to its US competitor, Anthropic, and its Claude model.

A model that works alone for days on end

In one of the test scenarios published by Alibaba, Qwen3.8-Max reportedly worked continuously on a single task for approximately five days, or 125 hours. The model completely reconstructed the experiment from a mathematical research paper and then independently improved its results. In another test, the system competed against 526 human teams in an online competition and defeated all but 68 of the participating groups within a 24-hour period. Such capabilities for the long-term, independent processing of complex tasks are considered by experts to be a crucial next step in development, moving away from a mere chatbot and toward a self-acting digital employee, often referred to as an agent.

This technological capability is not a side note, but the very core of the announcement. Anyone who builds a machine that can autonomously program, research, and solve problems for days on end is fundamentally changing how value creation is organized in companies. The marketing message of more leisure time picks up precisely on this point, as it attempts to frame a potentially disruptive technology in a positive light before the societal debate about its consequences has even properly begun.

It is noteworthy that both narratives—that of threat and that of liberation—ignore the same underlying uncertainty. To date, there is no reliable empirical evidence that generative AI has yet had a measurable, widespread effect on employment figures or economic productivity. Reality likely lies somewhere between these two striking extremes, characterized by gradual shifts within job profiles, task redistributions within companies, and a gradual redistribution of value creation, rather than an abrupt upheaval in one direction or the other.

Why Beijing is focusing on open models right now

A key strategic element of Qwen's policy is the model's openness. Alibaba announced that it would make the Qwen3.8-Max model weights freely available shortly after the initial release, allowing developers worldwide to run the system themselves and adapt it to their own applications. This approach differs fundamentally from the business strategy of leading US providers, who predominantly offer their top-tier models as closed, paid services.

The disclosure of model weights can be understood economically as an aggressive market penetration strategy. If developers worldwide can access powerful models free of charge, an ecosystem of applications emerges that builds on the proprietary technology and, in the long term, establishes it as the de facto standard, similar to what Google once did with its open Android operating system compared to Apple's closed iOS. In addition, Alibaba is massively intensifying price competition, for example, through discounts of up to eighty percent on using the model via its own developer platform, Qoder, during certain times of day. The Qwen app already boasted over 100 million monthly active users in January and has since been closely linked to services such as Taobao, Alipay, the travel portal Fliggy, the mapping service Amap, and the streaming provider Youku. Users can order food, book flights, shop, and get travel tips with a single voice command. In doing so, Alibaba is positioning Qwen not merely as a research product, but as a universal interface to its own retail and service empire.

This dual strategy of technological excellence on the one hand and mass-market integration on the other also explains why the leisure message works particularly well for Alibaba. A consumer product intended for daily use by millions sells more easily with a positive promise than with a threatening one. Anyone who fears losing their job due to a technology is unlikely to integrate it into their daily life willingly and enthusiastically. In February, Alibaba had to abruptly halt a generous voucher campaign surrounding the Chinese New Year after ten million orders were placed via the Qwen chatbot within nine hours, causing the systems to crash under the strain. The company had to issue a public apology for the failed marketing campaign, an incident that illustrates how fragile even technologically advanced systems can be when demand and infrastructure do not grow in tandem.

Even more revealing for the long-term stability of the Qwen project was the surprising resignation in March of Junyang Lin, the lead researcher behind the entire Qwen model suite and a driving force behind the company's open-source strategy. This departure came just as Qwen was making waves with its most powerful models to date and was accompanied by other departures from the core team. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu confirmed the departures to staff but denied reports of a mass resignation and simultaneously announced a restructuring of the management team and increased hiring to accelerate Qwen's development.
