The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany must increase significantly in order to achieve the goals set out in the Federal Climate Protection Act. This is shown by the graphic based on data from the Federal Environment Agency . Emissions in the energy sector have fallen by 38 percent over the past 20 years. They would have to fall by another 56 percent by 2030 in order to achieve the federal government's goals. Emissions in the other sectors must also fall faster in order to achieve the target: in industry by 35 percent, in buildings by 42 percent and in transport by 43 percent compared to 2021 levels. The agricultural sector generates the lowest emissions and still needs to reduce them compared to 2021 8.2 percent decrease. But this also means an acceleration, because between 2001 and 2021 emissions in this sector only fell by 10 percent.

According to the Federal Environment Agency, the emissions data for 2021 are currently being examined by the Expert Council for Climate Issues. The expert council will present an assessment of the data within one month. According to the law, the responsible ministries then have three months to submit an immediate program that contains proposals for measures that will bring the building sector and transport sector onto the intended target path in the coming years. However, the federal government is already working on an immediate climate protection program that is intended to meet these requirements as much as possible.

The Federal Environment Agency points out that the emissions data for 2021 represent the best possible calculation at the moment. However, they are nevertheless associated with corresponding uncertainties due to the limited statistical basis for calculations available at this point in time.

English Version: Germany must reduce emissions faster

The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany must pick up speed significantly if the targets set out in the Federal Climate Protection Act are still to be achieved. This is shown in the graphic based on data from the Federal Environment Agency . Emissions in the energy sector have fallen by 38 percent over the past 20 years. By 2030, they would have to fall by another 56 percent to meet the German government's targets. Emissions in the other sectors will also need to fall faster to meet targets: by 35 percent for industry, 42 percent for buildings and 43 percent for transport compared with 2021 levels. The agricultural sector generates the lowest emissions and still needs to reduce them by 8.2 percent compared with 2021. Even this represents an acceleration, however, as emissions in this sector fell by only 10 percent from 2001 to 2021.

According to the Federal Environment Agency, the 2021 emissions data are currently being reviewed by the Expert Council on Climate Issues. The Expert Council will present an assessment of the data within a month. After that, the relevant ministries have three months, according to the law, to submit an emergency program containing proposals for measures to bring the building and transport sectors onto the intended target path in the coming years. However, the German government is already working on an immediate climate protection program that is intended to meet these requirements as far as possible.

The Federal Environment Agency points out that the emissions data for 2021 represent the best possible calculation at present. However, they are nevertheless subject to uncertainties due to the limited statistical basis for calculation available at this time.
