An invention can be patented worldwide – for example, in Germany, France, and the USA. This then results in three patents stemming from one invention, representing a patent family. Therefore, in patent analysis, it is generally more useful to count patent families rather than patents. Samsung Electronics currently owns 1,189 patent families, making it number one, at least in quantitative terms. Huawei is in second place – this is also interesting because the USA is currently trying to keep Chinese companies out of the European and American 5G market by accusing them of espionage.
