COVID-19 (also known colloquially as Corona) is an infectious disease that can occur as a result of an infection with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

The coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is related to the pathogen that caused the SARS pandemic of 2002/03. The symptoms it causes are similar to those of the flu and, in severe cases, can be fatal. To date, the virus has spread to more than 185 countries and infected over 38.9 million people worldwide. The death toll related to the virus is currently over 1.09 million.

In April, more than 50 percent of German companies surveyed in a survey by the Ifo Institute stated that they would not survive longer than 6 months if the restrictions due to the corona pandemic were maintained for a longer period of time. According to the survey, the situation in German retail is most threatening; in April, almost 45 percent of companies in this sector stated that they would not be able to survive for longer than three months with the current restrictions.

According to a quick survey conducted by the DIHK among companies in Germany at the end of June, almost 80 percent of companies assume that sales will decline in 2020 due to the crisis. 20 percent of the companies surveyed said they had to cut staff due to the pandemic. 34 percent of the companies surveyed expected a return to normal business activity this year. 39 percent of companies assume that this will only be possible in 2021, and 11 percent even expect a return to normal business activities only after 2021.
