Die Hard – Fewer and fewer video stores in Germany

Autumn is fast approaching. But while many people are already mourning the end of summer, others are looking forward to cooler temperatures and cozy evenings on the couch at home. For video store operators, the beginning of autumn has long been like the start of the high season. After all, when the weather is bad, people like to stay at home and watch a film. The problem for video store operators is that they no longer have to go out the door to do this.

Thanks to Netflix, iTunes and Co., video stores are now in acute danger of extinction, because anyone who has access to the largest video store in the world at the push of a button doesn't have to rummage through the dusty shelves of a video store. As the following graphic based on figures from the IVD shows, the death of video stores in Germany is already well advanced. Of the 4,300 video stores in 2006, only 616 remain.
