The solar system on a solar field converts the electromagnetic spectrum of our sun “directly” into electrical current on sometimes only extremely thin semiconducting layers. The core element are the solar cells (combined into modules), which create a separation of positive and negative charges through the photon bombardment of the radiation. The power obtained in this way can either be used directly, stored in solar batteries or fed into the public power grid using inverters.

Solar fields as electricity generation systems?

According to a survey, outdoor solar systems the most popular as electricity generation systems in the neighborhood, because solar fields are nothing more than solar parks , consisting of a large photovoltaic solar system. While wind turbines have an acceptance rate of 47%, solar fields are at the top with 62%.

Monitoring systems for solar systems on solar fields

Solar system monitoring systems serve multiple purposes. They are used to track trends in a single photovoltaic system, to identify faults in or damage to solar cells, to compare a system's performance to design specifications, or to compare PV systems at different locations. This application area requires various sensors and monitoring systems adapted to the intended purpose.

Open-space installation on solar fields and solar parks

When it comes to mounting systems for outdoor photovoltaic systems, a distinction is made between fixed installations and tracking systems. Depending on the surface, a steel or aluminum frame is anchored into the ground by ramming or screwed onto concrete blocks. The angle of the modules is no longer changed after assembly.

Tracking systems follow the path of the sun to always ensure optimal alignment of the modules. This increases the yield, but also increases the investment and operating costs for maintenance and the energy required for tracking. A distinction is made between single-axis tracking - either only horizontally (The panel follows the position of the sun from sunrise to sunset from east to west.) or only vertically (The south-facing panel rotates depending on the height of the sun above the horizon.) and the two-axis tracking – horizontal and vertical. This increases the yields compared to fixed mounting: in Central European latitudes with only one-axis tracking by around 20% and with two-axis tracking by over 30%.

Another form of free-space assembly is floating assembly on bodies of water, where the modules are mounted on plastic floats. However, the cooling effect of the water increases the yield. The investment costs are 20-25% higher than with conventional assembly. The Fraunhofer Institute estimates the potential for floating PV systems alone to be 55 GWp on 25% of the areas destroyed by brown coal mining if they are flooded.

Funding opportunities for solar fields and solar parks

According to the Renewable Energy Act, solar systems are eligible for funding if they meet certain requirements. There are three options for EEG funding:
