Solar fence systems for trade, industry, logistics and commerce
In the wake of the energy transition and the ever falling prices for solar modules, other areas of application for solar energy generation are becoming interesting.
The statistics show the average sales price of solar modules from Canadian Solar Inc. from 2011 to 2020. In 2020, the average sales price of solar modules from the Canadian manufacturer was just under 0.25 US dollars per watt. Stated in the source as “average selling price”. The values before 2016 were taken from the previous year's publications.

Solar fence potential
A business premises is a mostly privately owned, non-public area on which companies' facilities, operations, administrations and headquarters are located.
In Germany there is no general regulation regarding the fencing of company premises. The EC Directive 89/654/EEC contains some regulations regarding traffic routes and danger areas on company premises. Accordingly, unauthorized employees must be prevented from entering areas of a company premises where there is a risk of objects falling. Furthermore, according to the general traffic safety obligation, there is a fencing requirement for system parts that can pose a particular danger to life and limb, such as those with open live parts, a risk of falling or similar (Section 5 Paragraph 1 Item 1 BImSchG).
A fence also offers protection against industrial espionage and economic theft.
According to a study, almost 30% of the industry is monitored by a security service, most of which contain fenced-in premises. This also applies, among other things, to the area of transport and logistics at 14.5%. It can therefore be assumed that well over 50% of the German economy maintains fenced areas, which in turn represents enormous photovoltaic potential for solar fences and solar walls.
A fence also offers solar power potential for autonomous power supply.
There is no overview, figures or studies on the number and areas of fenced company areas. So you can only indirectly evaluate the solar power potential for solar fences and solar walls based on the shares in the security sector.
Distribution of customer sectors of private security service providers in Germany (2017)
- 29.1% – Industry
- 23.3% – authorities, public services
- 14.5% – transport and logistics

- 1.3% – real estate industry
- 1.2% – private households
- 0.7% – Healthcare

So far, company roofs and the flat roofs of warehouses and production halls have been interesting for solar systems .
In addition to the solar carport options for company parking spaces, which, among other things, will be mandatory in Baden-Württemberg from 2022, solar fences and solar walls are now also becoming interesting from an economic point of view.
Suitable for:
Motorway fence protection and noise barriers
Another solar fence potential is the fence systems along the motorway. In Germany there are guidelines for protective fences (wildlife fence) on federal motorways against wild animals. In some areas of the motorway there are also protective walls against noise, which in turn can be optimized as solar walls.
