Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the least densely populated state in Germany. It boasts three of the country's 16 national parks, more than any other German state. In addition, it has eight nature parks and hundreds of protected landscapes and nature reserves. Large areas of the landscape are used for energy production via wind turbines.

In the industrial sector, the maritime industry, mechanical engineering, the energy sector, and the food industry play a significant role. Besides several industrial centers such as Rostock, Schwerin, and Wismar, agriculture and tourism are particularly important economic sectors. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the most popular domestic tourist destination in Germany.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is among the leaders in Germany in the field of renewable energies, both in terms of electricity production and the manufacturing of wind turbines and photovoltaic systems.
In an average wind year, approximately 46% of the electricity demand in the state can already be met by wind energy. As of mid-2016, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had 1,819 wind turbines with an installed capacity of 3,008 megawatts. Several offshore wind farms (EnBW Baltic 1 and Baltic 2) are located off the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and others are under construction or in the planning stages.

Decentralized biogas plants and photovoltaic systems play a relatively minor role compared to wind energy in environmentally friendly energy production. The northeastern state was the first to cover its electricity consumption entirely from sustainable sources in a climate-neutral manner. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was once dependent on electricity imports. Through the expansion of renewable energies, it has developed into a significant electricity exporter.
“The northern German states are leaders in the field of renewable energies. We want to achieve the energy transition. To do this, we must expand renewable energies more quickly and promote them more strongly,” said Manuela Schwesig, Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern currently sees no need to impose a solar obligation for the installation of photovoltaic systems on new non-residential buildings and open parking lots.
However, agreements from the coalition agreement have not yet been implemented. To date, there is neither a solar potential map nor a guideline for the expansion of solar energy. Likewise, there is no master plan for the use of roof surfaces on public buildings.
Since 2014, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has produced more green electricity than it consumes itself and exports it to other federal states.
