The no to the solar obligation from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Meckpomm)

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the least populated federal state in Germany. Three of the 16 national parks belong to Meckpomm, more than any other federal state. There are also eight nature parks and hundreds of landscape and nature reserves. Large parts of the landscape are used to generate energy through wind turbines.

In the industrial sector, the maritime industry, mechanical engineering, the energy industry and the food industry play a large part. In addition to some industrial centers such as Rostock, Schwerin and Wismar, agriculture and tourism are particularly important economic sectors. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the most popular travel destination in Germany.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of the leaders in Germany in the field of renewable energies, both in terms of electricity production and the manufacture of wind turbines and photovoltaic systems.

In an average wind year, around 46% of the state's electricity needs can be covered by wind energy. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there were 1,819 wind turbines with an installed capacity of 3,008 megawatts in mid-2016. There are several offshore wind farms off the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (EnBW Baltic 1 and Baltic 2), others are under construction or are being planned.

Decentralized biogas plants and photovoltaic systems play a rather subordinate role compared to wind energy in environmentally friendly energy production. The country in the northeast was the first to be able to cover its electricity consumption completely from sustainable sources in a climate-neutral manner. Meckpomm was once dependent on imported electricity. By expanding renewable energies, it was able to develop into a significant electricity exporter.

“The northern German states are leaders in the field of renewable energies. We want to create the energy transition. To do this, we must expand renewable energies more quickly and promote them more strongly,” said Manuela Schwesig, Prime Minister of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

To this end, the government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania currently sees no need to demand a solar obligation to install photovoltaic systems on new non-residential buildings and open parking spaces.

But agreements from the coalition agreement have not yet been implemented. To date, there is neither a solar potential register nor a guideline for the expansion of solar energy. There is also no master plan for the use of the roof areas of public buildings.

Since 2014, Meckpomm has been producing more green electricity than it consumes and exporting it to other federal states.
