Since the advent of the internet thirty years ago, access has expanded rapidly. In Europe, internet access was around 63 percent in 2009, growing to almost 80 percent within a decade. Less than 5 percent of people living in Africa had internet access in 2009, while now almost a quarter of the continent's population has internet access.
