Thirty years ago, Tim Berners-Lee published his landmark scientific proposal, “ Information Management: A Proposal ,” which laid the foundation for the development of the foundations of the Internet. Berners-Lee was a computer scientist at CERN when he developed the concept and proposal.

After the advent of the Internet thirty years ago, access expanded rapidly. In Europe, internet access was around 63 percent in 2009, and within a decade it grew to almost 80 percent. Less than 5 percent of people living in Africa had access to the Internet in 2009, while nearly a quarter of people across the continent now have access to the Internet.
