Thirty years ago, Tim Berners-Lee published his seminal scientific proposal, " Information Management: A Proposal ," which laid the foundation for the development of the internet's basic principles. Berners-Lee was a computer scientist at CERN when he developed the concept and the proposal.

Since the advent of the internet thirty years ago, access has expanded rapidly. In Europe, internet access was around 63 percent in 2009, growing to almost 80 percent within a decade. Less than 5 percent of people living in Africa had internet access in 2009, while now almost a quarter of the continent's population has internet access.
