Depending on the technology used, electricity from renewable energy sources can be produced significantly more cheaply than electricity generated in conventional power plants. This is shown in a study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. According to the study, electricity from gas turbines and coal-fired power plants is the most expensive to produce.

Photovoltaic systems convert solar radiation into electrical energy using solar cells. In a global comparison, Germany, along with China, the USA, and Japan, was recently among the leading countries in the use of photovoltaics for electricity generation.

In Germany, the installed capacity of photovoltaic systems has increased continuously. In 2020, photovoltaic systems with a capacity of approximately 54 gigawatts were installed in Germany. The electricity generated by these systems amounted to roughly 51 terawatt-hours in the same year. The largest solar power generation capacities are located in southern Germany. Bavaria currently has by far the largest capacity of any German state, followed by Baden-Württemberg.

▶️ China's fossil fuel climate strategy: Using fossil energy to produce climate-friendly solar panels, wind power technology and batteries

China's climate strategy is full of contradictions and raises many questions. On the one hand, the country is investing massively in the expansion of renewable energies like almost no other. On the other hand, numerous new coal-fired power plants continue to be built, emitting enormous amounts of CO2. This fossil fuel is deliberately used to power the energy-intensive production of green technology. Ironically, solar panels, which are supposed to generate clean energy, are manufactured using coal-fired electricity. The production of wind turbines and state-of-the-art batteries for electric cars also relies on this fossil fuel base. Thus, every "climate-friendly" technology from China carries a significant CO2 footprint from its production. Is this a clever transitional strategy to supply the world with affordable green technology, or does this approach hinder global climate protection? This article analyzes the paradox of how a clean future is to be built with dirty energy. Learn what consequences this strategy has for the global energy transition and climate goals. [...]
