Logistics consists of the sub-areas procurement logistics, production logistics, distribution logistics and disposal logistics. Each of these areas connects to the others, creating a long chain.

Logistics actually consists of two areas. Intralogistics is a very sensitive and relatively small industry. On the other hand, external logistics with transport, traffic, warehousing and handling companies is one of the largest sectors of the German economy.

Suitable for:

Logistics is both an interdisciplinary science and an economic branch or operational function in organizations that deal with the planning, control, optimization and implementation of flows of goods, information and people.

These flows include transport, storage, handling, picking, sorting, packaging and distribution. When it comes to general cargo, we speak of material flow. In some cases, the entirety of these planning or implementing processes is referred to as logistics. In addition to this so-called process or flow-oriented view of logistics, there are also other views that view it as a corporate management tool, as well as the view that all phases in the product life cycle are viewed by logistics.

The logistics industry consists largely of freight forwarders and warehouses as well as transport companies and has become increasingly important since the end of the 20th century due to the distribution of production across numerous locations (globalization). In Germany it is now the third largest industry in terms of number of employees with comparatively low specific added value.

Not e-commerce, not warehouse & distribution, IoT and other topics are the current focus of logistics. Our AI found: “Employing specialized logistics service providers is one of the smart and strategic management decisions of companies that want to achieve greater efficiency in their internal logistics processes.”

Specialized logistics services for greater efficiency

Automation is only part of the solution. The global markets are also constantly changing. A fixed strategy and long-term logistical planning is not possible without modular and flexible agitation models.

Is it coming, warehouse logistics without people?

The megatrends of digitalization, automation and networking shape the processes of our daily lives. At the same time, they are an important factor for the economic power of the leading industrial nations, which constantly advance technology through constant innovation. Hardware becoming more and more precise and software becoming more powerful every year enable system solutions that do the work of human specialists in more and more areas. Logistics is also affected by this and the question arises as to whether we are facing an era of camps without people.

For many people, robots have become an integral part of everyday life. The use of industrial robots has long been standard in the manufacturing industry. Logistics still had some catching up to do here. This is mainly because robots are more or less blind and deaf. It is not that they lack strength, but that they lack human senses. And in order to function smoothly in the warehouse, future generations of robots will have to master these very senses.

The pickup logistics of tomorrow?

Why pick up the furniture from the rack warehouse if you can't do it via a pick station? (Source: Pixabay)

Who does not know that? You're in the car, you're hungry and you suddenly decide to stop at one of the big fast food chains, order one of the burger menus at the drive-in terminal and have the bulging bag handed to you through the open window a few meters later. How convenient would it be to be able to purchase bulkier goods such as furniture or hardware store items in the same way?

After the first drive-ins appeared in Germany in the 1950s in the form of drive-in cinemas, it took until the 1980s before McDonald's opened the first drive-in in Berlin to sell its burgers. Since then, drive-ins have enjoyed an impressive triumph in this country and their success has meant that the practical counters are no longer only used by fast food restaurants.

A focus was on supermarket chains such as Rewe, Metro and Real, which tested the collection of items previously purchased online in their stores. There is a good reason for the retailers' activism, as the online giant Amazon has already positioned itself in the USA with its Fresh program for groceries and the associated pick-up stations. Observers therefore see the food segment as one of the most important areas of application for Click & Collect and other pickup solutions, in which buyers load their goods into the car like a drive-thru.

Future concepts for supply logistics

The distribution of perishable goods in rural areas places the highest demands on food suppliers. Innovative logistics concepts are required to enable a high standard of service.

Public services refer to the provision of everyday goods and services to the population. Securing the necessary infrastructure is undertaken either by the public sector or by private entrepreneurs. Comprehensive fresh logistics is already common practice in the USA, Great Britain and especially in Asia. Supermarkets run their own online shops that ensure timely delivery of groceries. In Germany, a functioning supply structure still depends largely on the quality of housing and location. Local retail establishments and retail-related service providers are socially important meeting places and workplaces are of great social importance as sales outlets. However, the number of shops in rural areas has been declining for years. However, a complete infrastructure is essential for older people in particular due to a lack of mobility.

Green logistics – individual measures not effective

Green footprint through efficient intralogistics – Image: @shutterstock|Mr Twister/lucadp

More and more logisticians are thinking “green”. But environmentally friendly and resource-saving intralogistics requires highly efficient and well-thought-out material handling systems. This not only means the energy consumption of systems, but also the efficiency of individual components of a logistics center.

Since 2010, legislation has stipulated that logistics buildings must ensure low-CO2 operations. This means that a large proportion of energy consumption must largely come from renewable sources. By 2020, the federal government has set itself the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to 1990. Germany is expected to become almost greenhouse gas neutral by 2050. Not only politics, but also rising energy costs and customer requirements are putting pressure on a better energy balance. A study conducted by PwC on sustainability in the transport and logistics industry comes to the conclusion that customer requirements are the strongest determining factor for sustainability regulations. More and more companies are therefore committed to an environmentally friendly supply chain - and not just for reasons of reputation. Markus Becker, Business Development Manager at the Japanese material handling expert DAIFUKU, explains: “We have been following Environmental Vision 2020 since 2011, with which we as a company stand for a sustainable environment. Every business activity we do is carried out against the background of environmentally conscious actions. Of course, this particularly includes the development and provision of material flow systems with low environmental impact.”
