Survey on the use of search engines/information searches on the internet up to 2020. In a 2019 survey in Germany, approximately 18.5 million German-speaking people stated that they used the internet daily for information searches. Compared to the previous year, this was a decrease of more than six million people. At the same time, the proportion of people who used search engines at least once a week increased.
How often are Germans online?
The internet has become indispensable in both private and professional life. The amount of time spent online has steadily increased in recent years: in 2007, young people spent about 106 minutes online per day, while by 2018 this had more than doubled. A survey in Germany revealed that people were online several times a day, or even constantly. Search engines played a less significant role in daily browsing, while messaging services were the most frequently used.
Google
is the most frequently used search engine for information on the internet; at least three-quarters of users entered search terms into this search engine on both mobile devices and desktops. In November 2019, Google's desktop search engine market share, measured by page views, was approximately 88.2 percent. Microsoft Bing came in second with 5.2 percent.
