The entrepreneur and organic farmer Franz Obermayer senior is the initiator of the showcase project together with his son Franz. In the future, organic grain will be grown on an area of ​​four hectares and solar power will be generated at the same time.

Aiwanger: “The vertically mounted agri-photovoltaic park in Kirchweidach is a groundbreaking pioneering project in the energy transition. The innovative technology combines energy production and food cultivation on the same area. On the left and right, renewable electricity is produced via the vertical solar modules and valuable organic grain is harvested in between. In addition, the facility also provides noise protection from the adjacent train station. With Agri-PV we are overcoming the competition from agriculture and energy production and accelerating the expansion of renewable energies in the Free State.”

The 1,700 vertical modules start 1.20 meters above the ground and are arranged in 600-meter-long rows. The vertical elevation requires less space compared to the horizontal orientation. Only one percent of the arable land is built over. There is a distance of twelve meters between the rows, which enables normal agricultural management. In order to temporarily store the electricity generated from the system and distribute it as needed, there is a 1.2 MWh storage facility next to the field.

“The combination of Agri-PV with additional battery storage shows the high innovative character of the project. The solar power generated can be fed into the grid exactly when there is market demand. Franz Obermayer has taken a forward-looking path here,” explained State Minister Aiwanger. He hopes that the initiative will find imitators across Bavaria. “Many farmers today are already energy farmers. Agri-PV can broaden the economic base of farms and become a lucrative second source of income.”

The Economics and Energy Minister also highlighted Bavaria's leading role in the expansion of renewable energies. “Bavaria is a leader in Germany in the field of photovoltaics. We currently have over 800,000 systems in operation in the Free State with an installed capacity of more than 20 GW.
