Gamescom, Europe's most important trade fair for video games, opens its doors in Cologne today. This year, eSports events are expected to be another major draw, as they are an integral part of gaming culture.
But it's not just passionate gamers who follow virtual sports events with enthusiasm; even outside the scene, eSports an increasingly common term, as our graphic shows. While the word was known to just under a third of those surveyed last year, this year almost half are familiar with the term eSports, and another 27 percent have heard of it but couldn't explain the term.
The increasing popularity of eSport is due in no small part to the growing presence of this phenomenon in German media: Not only do private broadcasters like Sport1 or ProSieben air eSport formats, but professional gamers are also increasingly part of the reporting on public broadcasters such as ARD and Deutsche Welle.
