The freighter MSC Zoe, operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, ran aground in the North Sea, with 270 containers reportedly lost overboard. Debris is now washing ashore on the beaches of German North Sea islands. In total, tens of millions of containers are currently in transit across the world's oceans. As the infographic based on data from Alphaliner shows, many of the 10 largest shipping companies have a standard container capacity well above one million. The top 10 shipping companies shown in the graphic have a combined capacity of approximately 18.6 million standard containers.
