Over 6,000 container ships cross the world's oceans daily, transporting the majority of globally traded goods. According to the shipping information portal Alphaliner, this fleet moves approximately 24 million standard containers (TEU) to their destination ports.

As the graphic shows, the largest container ship fleet is headquartered in the small European country of Denmark. Following in the footsteps of its Viking ancestors, APM-Maersk controls a powerful fleet of 653 active vessels – though nowadays less martial and more capitalist in character. The second largest number of container ships are headquartered in a landlocked country. The Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) was founded in Naples in 1970, but today manages its operations and approximately 552 ships from mountainous Geneva.
