Laut Klima-Think-Tank Ember haben Wind- und Solarenergie 2020 einen Anteil von rund zehn Prozent an der weltweiten Stromerzeugung. Ein großer Schritt nach vorne im Vergleich zu dem geringen Anteil von nur fünf Prozent fünf Jahre zuvor. Seit 2015 konnten die erneuerbaren Energien Kohle einen Marktanteil von fünf Prozent abringen, dieser liegt 2020 weltweit bei 33 Prozent. Der fossile Brennstoff wird in den meisten Ländern der Welt nach und nach durch erneuerbare Energien ersetzt; in einigen Ländern wie Deutschland geschieht das jedoch schneller als in anderen.

According to the climate think tank Ember, wind and solar energy will have a share of around ten percent of global electricity generation in 2020. This is a big step forward compared to the low share of only five percent five years earlier. Since 2015, the renewable energies coal have been able to gain a market share of five percent; in 2020, this will be 33 percent worldwide. Fossil fuels are gradually being replaced by renewables in most countries around the world, but in some countries, such as Germany, this is happening faster than in others.
