🌬️ Germany's wind power targets until 2030

Germany's wind power targets are clearly defined: 115 gigawatts of onshore and 30 gigawatts offshore capacity are to be installed by 2030. However, these targets are currently far from being achieved, as the expansion of wind power installations in the country has stagnated. By October 2023, only a net increase of approximately 2.5 gigawatts had been achieved, of which 2.3 gigawatts were onshore and a mere 0.2 gigawatts offshore. While this may represent an increase of 0.1 gigawatts compared to the previous year, Germany still has a long way to go to reach its targets.

🏭 Challenges in onshore expansion

Particularly worrying is the fact that onshore wind energy expansion is far from sufficient to achieve the set target. Currently, the average daily output of wind power capacity is only 8.4 megawatts. To reach the targeted 115 gigawatts by 2030, however, output would have to be increased to an average of 19.7 megawatts per day. This will require considerable effort and investment in wind energy.

🌊 Challenges in the offshore sector

The situation is not much better in the area of ​​offshore wind farms. Although Germany has great potential in the North and Baltic Seas, only limited progress has been made so far. Problems such as permitting procedures, environmental regulations, and technical challenges have hampered expansion. Significant efforts and improved cooperation between government, industry, and environmentalists are needed to achieve the targets for offshore wind power.

The reasons for the current challenges in wind power expansion are manifold.
