Growth of the global wind industry

The wind industry is the fastest-growing energy sector in the world. In 2020 alone, the capacity of newly installed wind turbines amounted to approximately 93 gigawatts. Just 20 years ago, only about 6.5 gigawatts were connected to the global grid in a single year, as the graphic based on GWEC data shows. This is due, on the one hand, to the technological development of increasingly efficient wind turbines, and on the other hand, to the growing number of countries embracing the global trend toward renewable energies. Newly installed capacity increased at an annual growth rate of around 22 percent between 2001 and 2010. In the following years, however, growth slowed somewhat. The largest share of newly installed wind turbines is accounted for by China – the People's Republic was responsible for around half of all newly constructed onshore and offshore wind farms in 2020. The most important European markets are Germany and the United Kingdom. These two nations are particularly active in the offshore sector. Together, they operate approximately 51 percent of all offshore wind turbines.
