More and more energy is coming from wind power

June 15th was Global Wind Day. This day of action for wind energy aims to raise awareness of the importance of alternative energy sources for environmental protection. In Germany, the share of wind power in gross electricity generation has steadily increased since the 1990s.

As the graphic based on data from the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) shows, it amounted to 23.5 percent last year. Since 2010, it has thus almost quadrupled. Most wind turbines are located in northern Germany, including offshore installations in the North and Baltic Seas.

In a European comparison, Germany has the highest electricity generation from wind power, followed by Great Britain, Spain, and France. However, the expansion of wind power plants in Germany has been progressing slowly for several years. One reason for this is the lengthy permitting processes by authorities.
