German Retail Federation expects total sales of €48.7 billion this year , an increase of approximately ten percent compared to the previous year. However, not all retailers vying for digital customers are benefiting equally from this growth.
As our infographic shows, those retailers who specialized in digital commerce from the outset were able to differentiate themselves from the competition. While in 2008 they were roughly on par with brick-and-mortar retailers (or their online business) and traditional mail-order companies, accounting for 31.4 percent of sales, they stood out in 2016 with 38.7 percent (approximately 17 billion euros).
The German Retail Federation (HDE) points out that, as a result of so-called multi-channel strategies, more and more hybrid forms are becoming established. For example, pure online retailers are also opening brick-and-mortar stores.
