According to a survey of logistics experts in Germany, around 10 percent rated their company's adaptability to driverless transport systems (e.g., pallet transport) as very high. That's not many. Another 29% rated it as "High adaptability." 26% and 15% rated it as "Medium adaptability" and "Low adaptability," respectively.

Considering that automation (see retrofit) is one of the major challenges of the future in terms of speed and flexibility, the relevance of driverless transport systems is undoubtedly seen as important. 22% of the logistics experts surveyed stated that driverless transport systems have "very high relevance" for their company. A further 33% and 23% expressed "high relevance" and "moderate relevance," respectively.

Other questions posed to logistics experts in logistics practice and IT services also highlight the need for innovation, even retrofitting . However, the increasing individualization of customer expectations and the high complexity of external influences raise many questions about how to achieve these changes.

For 45% of logistics experts, the complexity of external influences is highly relevant. For a further 31%, it is even very highly relevant.

Use and automate storage space more effectively – How storage areas can be reduced by up to 85%

Making more effective use of storage space – Image: Maxx-Studio|Shutterstock.com

Warehouse logistics managers at industrial or commercial companies and logistics service providers often face the problem of limited available storage space or rooms that no longer meet current requirements due to sales growth. One possible solution would, of course, be to expand the area by constructing new buildings, but this often fails due to limited space or the sometimes high costs of new construction.

In this case, modernizing existing systems is a promising approach, as significant space savings can be achieved with modern storage systems. Furthermore, the equipment improves workplace ergonomics for staff, which has a positive impact on employee health and thus leads to a reduction in absenteeism.

Top Ten: Leading manufacturers of industrial trucks in intralogistics

Intralogistics industrial trucks – Image: Xpert.Digital & Robert Kneschke|Shutterstock.com

Industrial trucks are among the most important elements of intralogistics. These are either track-guided or trackless, as well as rail-bound, transport vehicles used for the internal transport of goods and merchandise.

Two major global players in intralogistics for industrial trucks are based in Germany. Measured by revenue, the KION Group and Jungheinrich AG ranked second and third among the world's largest manufacturers of industrial trucks in 2019. The top spot has belonged to the Japanese conglomerate Toyota for many years. Industrial trucks encompass transport equipment for the horizontal movement of goods, primarily used at ground level within companies. This includes, among others, forklifts, pallet trucks, order pickers, and tractors. Revenue from industrial trucks accounts for nearly one-fifth of the total revenue of the German intralogistics sector.

Planning a solar and photovoltaic open-field system or open-field system

Industrial plant with its own power source from a ground-mounted photovoltaic system – Image: Peteri|Shutterstock.com

Do you own a property and don't know how to use it economically?

The more sealed the surface, the more ideal it is for ground-mounted photovoltaic systems. The less agricultural land is suitable for ecological purposes (low yield), the more suitable a ground-mounted solar system becomes. Incidentally, there are also interesting combinations of agrivoltaics and photovoltaics that are applicable to both ecological and photovoltaic applications without negatively impacting natural resources.

Soil points are crucial . They are a key indicator for assessing soil quality. As early as 1934, soil and arable land quality were officially recorded in the 'German Soil Map' ( DGK 5 Bo ) as part of the Reich soil assessment  . Each federal state regulates independently which areas are suitable for agriculture and at what soil point level an area can no longer be approved for the construction of a solar park .

Sensible use of already sealed surfaces or properties

Existing sealed surfaces typically already serve a purpose for which they were originally constructed. Examples include company buildings, warehouses, production facilities, and company parking lots. Photovoltaics can profitably expand their function as an additional source of revenue or utilize them as an autonomous power supply to gain a competitive edge. This addresses the anticipated higher costs associated with environmental regulations, peak load management (infrastructure and grid stability), and CO2 emissions.

The CO2 balance, also called greenhouse gas balance or CO2 footprint, will gain more decisive influence in the future if it is subject to tax and cost-related surcharges in the CO2 labeling of goods and services.

The next e-commerce trend - delivery vs. click & collect: Buying groceries online – and then what?

The next e-commerce trend: ordering groceries online (Source: Rewe)

Having to go to the supermarket after a long day at work to buy pizza or pasta for dinner isn't exactly an appealing prospect for many. Of course, things are different now, as online grocery shopping is commonplace in many places. While England and France boast high growth rates, other European countries are still in the starting blocks. This includes Germany – for now – where online grocery shopping, despite significant increases, remains a niche phenomenon. However, this could change quickly, as many food retailers are now relying on online shop solutions to meet the growing competition from e-commerce.

Customers appreciate these efforts. According to studies, over 60 percent of consumers find it convenient to buy everyday items online. Besides a user-friendly website and competitive prices, smoothly running intralogistics processes are among the key success factors for a functioning online grocery store. But what about the delivery of the goods?

Looking for a warehouse strategy? Here are 10 signs of an inefficient warehouse and what you can do about it

Warehouse strategy sought – Image: Robert Kneschke|Shutterstock.com

Modern, smoothly functioning intralogistics has a significant impact on the productivity of companies of every industry and size. However, even today, many companies still rely on the decades-old practice of storing goods in conventional rack warehouses. But this very method can hinder intralogistics processes.

The following 10 indicators can be used to easily assess whether a realignment of the intralogistics strategy is necessary. The more points that apply to your own warehouse structure and processes, the closer you are to considering switching to an automated storage and retrieval system.

Standardized reusable fruit and vegetable containers – The next intralogistics step for auto-e-logistics and e-food

Standardized reusable containers – Image: GeometricNebula & Holos__8 & nehophoto & Victor Prilepa|Shutterstock.com

The market volume for fresh fruit and vegetables in Germany is €14.9 billion per year. Germany's self-sufficiency rate is 22% for fruit and 36% for vegetables. Vegetables are grown in Germany by slightly fewer than 6,000 farms in open fields and almost 1,700 farms in greenhouses.

In the German food market, consumers purchase almost half of all fruit and vegetable sales in discount stores.

Besides production, the processing of fruits and vegetables is an important economic sector and is considered a sub-sector of the food industry. It also includes the production of fruit and vegetable juices. Its approximately 250 companies employ more than 30,000 people and generate around eleven billion euros in revenue.

German consumers prefer shopping at the country's numerous discount supermarkets. The discount chain's network is among the largest in the German food retail sector.
