In logistics consulting, automation, digitalization, and energy solutions are still considered trending topics ( see Willenbrock ). This is actually surprising, as these are fundamental and groundbreaking decisions for anyone wanting to compete and grow in the market.
'Smart logistics consulting' or 'Logistics consulting 4.0' would certainly be a better term here, encompassing precisely these topics such as
- digitalization
- E-commerce / Unified commerce
- Autonomous power supply / energy solutions
- New logistics strategies such as autonomous shopping/retail systems – autonomous stores / micro-hubs / micro-fulfillment
This includes the fact that current logistics is reaching the end of a developmental stage, moving to the next level. This also includes new warehouse concepts and strategies. In Unified Commerce, the boundaries between warehouse, distribution, and retail shelf become blurred. That's a concise way to describe it. Autonomous power supply, driven by the EU's zero-emissions policy, opens up further opportunities and possibilities. But also risks that must be carefully considered.
- We offer organizational and planning ideas through to turnkey solutions.
- If required, we also provide market figures and forecasts for over 150 countries.
Only smart logistics consulting, or Logistics Consulting 4.0, will meet current market demands
Automation is only part of the solution. Global markets are also constantly changing. A fixed strategy and long-term logistics planning are not possible without modular and flexible agitation models.
Micro-Fulfillment – Crises rarely come alone
Major crises rarely appear out of nowhere. There are warning signs, ominous developments, and missed opportunities to intervene in time. The complexity of the interrelationships often leads to the inevitable: an economic crisis or the bursting of yet another bubble. Since World War II, the Western world has been largely spared major disasters and catastrophes. Brexit itself was considered manageable, without causing major problems for the EU.
The COVID-19 pandemic changed everything abruptly. Existing problems and bottlenecks became particularly noticeable in logistics. Supply chains were disrupted, and the population's needs could only be met with emergency logistical solutions. For shipping logistics, 2020 saw a volume of work comparable to the Christmas season, almost a full year's worth of business.
It's slowly becoming clear to everyone that the current situation is not temporary. That the changes already implemented will be permanent and will become the norm.

Courier, express and parcel shipments in Germany
The revenue of the courier, express, and parcel (CEP) industry in Germany rose steadily between 2009 and 2019, primarily due to the boom in online retail. In 2019, the CEP sector in Germany generated approximately €21.3 billion in revenue. In the CEP end-customer market in Germany, Deutsche Post DHL held the largest share of revenue in the 2017/2018 fiscal year, accounting for 69 percent.
In 2019, the CEP (courier, express, and parcel) industry in Germany employed nearly 513,000 people. This was almost 200,000 more employees than in 2002. The total income of these employees also rose sharply by 2019, from almost €7.7 billion in 2002 to almost €18.3 billion in 2019.
The number of deliveries has been growing steadily since 2010: In 2019, almost 3.7 billion packages were sent. Germany is among the countries where a comparatively high number of packages are sent per person per year. According to forecasts, slightly fewer packages will be sent in 2020 due to the coronavirus crisis.

Europe & USA: Last mile market, courier, express and parcel shipments

Since the earliest human civilizations, people have needed to transport goods from one place to another. Economic growth and industrial specialization led to the establishment of larger transport routes. Improved use of technology, coupled with advances in science, has allowed us to deliver to multiple locations much faster and with less effort. The logistics industry connects the business world, and this connection evolves in response to changing market needs.
The emergence of the courier, express, and parcel (CEP) services market exemplifies the evolution of the logistics industry. Changing customer needs and the dynamics of the global economy compelled the logistics market to adapt and create new opportunities. One of these market needs was the demand for a faster, better, and safer way to transport both industrial goods to facilitate production and consumer goods to satisfy the demands of customers worldwide.
Simply put: The CEP market offers traditional postal services faster and more reliably.

E-commerce and warehouse logistics – growth engine and challenge
The current landscape of the retail sector is characterized by massive changes, as consumers' purchasing behavior is increasingly altered by the growing digital connectivity of their customers. They are ordering more and more frequently via PCs or mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones, instead of buying goods in brick-and-mortar stores. Last year, e-commerce sales in Germany reached almost €34 billion. And this is just the beginning, as online retail is predicted to continue its strong growth in the coming years.
The rapid pace of e-commerce is placing entirely new demands on logistics. This applies both to the courier, express, and parcel (CEP) services market, with its handling of shipments and returns, and to intralogistics, which deals with the storage, transport, and order picking of goods. Due to intense competition and low margins, more and more providers are striving to streamline their cost structures while simultaneously optimizing the critical success factor of delivery time.

Plan solar systems with photovoltaic solutions for freight forwarding and contract logistics
The EU Green Deal is the centerpiece of the new climate protection law and is driving developments and measures forward. In some German states, legal regulations already mandate the installation of photovoltaic systems in new logistics buildings. The requirement for solar panels in existing logistics buildings and centers will follow. Initial announcements regarding this have already been made by politicians, as the EU aims to be the world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
How we continue to secure the infrastructure of our key industries will be crucial for the future! In Germany today, key industries include the automotive industry, construction industry, food industry, chemical industry, electrical industry, energy production, mechanical engineering and shipbuilding.
The COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, has demonstrated that the functioning supply chain management of trade and industry is largely due to the logistical expertise of freight forwarders and contract logistics providers. The fact that there were "only" shortages like the "toilet paper crisis" will remain a humorous footnote in the future.

E-Commerce: New ways in online grocery shopping
Online shopping has long been a part of everyday life. Germans are still cautious in one area, however: food and beverages currently make up only a small share of e-commerce. This will not remain the case.
With a peak of 11.5 percent of their purchasing volume, Germans are the European champions of online shopping. Clothing, books, and shoes are the most popular items. For the majority of the population, online shopping has long been a part of everyday life. Germans are still cautious in one area, however: food and beverages currently make up only a very small share of e-commerce. But this will not remain the case. The future of the food retail sector is evolving – and with it, logistics.
