Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, inaugurated Bavaria's first vertically mounted agri-photovoltaic system in Kirchweidach, in the district of Altötting. Entrepreneur and organic farmer Franz Obermayer Sr., together with his son Franz, initiated the flagship project. Organic grain will be cultivated on an area of ​​four hectares, and solar power will be generated simultaneously.

Aiwanger: “The vertically mounted agri-photovoltaic park in Kirchweidach is a pioneering project for the energy transition. This innovative technology combines energy production and food cultivation on the same surface. Renewable electricity is generated by the vertically mounted solar modules on either side, while valuable organic grain is harvested in between. The plant also serves as a noise barrier for the adjacent train station. With agri-PV, we are overcoming the competition between agriculture and energy production and accelerating the expansion of renewable energies in Bavaria.”

The 1,700 vertical modules begin 1.20 meters above the ground and are arranged in 600-meter-long rows. The vertical mounting requires less space compared to a horizontal orientation. Only one percent of the arable land is covered. The rows are spaced twelve meters apart, allowing for normal agricultural operations. A 1.2 MWh storage facility is located next to the field to store the electricity generated by the system and release it as needed.

“The combination of agri-PV with additional battery storage demonstrates the project’s high level of innovation. The generated solar power can be fed into the grid precisely when market demand is high. Franz Obermayer has taken a pioneering approach here,” explained State Minister Aiwanger. He hopes the initiative will find imitators throughout Bavaria. “Many farmers are already energy producers. Agri-PV can broaden the economic base of farms and become a lucrative second source of income.”

The Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy also emphasized Bavaria's leading role in the expansion of renewable energies. "In the field of photovoltaics, Bavaria is the leader in Germany. We currently have over 800,000 systems in operation in the Free State with an installed capacity of more than 20 GW. Baden-Württemberg, in second place among the federal states, has half that installed capacity. And we will continue to expand in the coming years," Aiwanger stressed.
