In the meantime, demand and interest have increased considerably. A technical and organizational sub-sector of photovoltaics is developing into an independent market. Alongside ground-mounted systems, rooftop solar, and balcony solar, another market is emerging with promising growth potential.
All emerging markets undergo a nearly identical development. Following the ' Blue Ocean Strategy ', many new suppliers with standardized solutions have emerged, both from the photovoltaic sector and from the traditional industry of garages and patio roofs.
The problem, however, is that not all parking spaces are created equal. The number of custom solutions that deviate from the standard is increasing. This is because, for single or double solar carports, standard designs can generally be used. However, the situation changes completely for larger installations, from access routes to the various initial conditions. For large solar carports, steel structures are usually the only viable option. They can last for decades. Occasional cleaning is sufficient, they are stable, and, most importantly, can withstand heavy snow loads. Compared to aluminum or steel, wood is very susceptible to weathering and therefore requires regular and extensive maintenance.
While the market for individual solar carport systems is well-served, this cannot simply be extrapolated to the market for large-scale solar carport systems. Very few companies can truly offer a solution for solar carports with a parking area of more than 30 vehicles. Furthermore, these solutions must be affordable, structurally sound, durable, and provide sufficient stability in the event of collisions.
The market for solar carports combines not only the basic components, solar modules, photovoltaic substructure and inverters, but also the segments of charging stations, electricity storage and smart grid.
Depending on the number of parking spaces and the size of the carport, solar carports have different requirements for installation and materials. While single or double carports for private individuals don't involve much organizational or technical effort, the situation is quite different for a parking lot with, for example, 35 to 75 parking spaces or more. There are generally numerous pitfalls to avoid when building carports. For large parking areas, a carport from a DIY store or so-called designer carports won't suffice. In most cases, solid wood or softwood is used as construction timber (construction wood) such as spruce, fir, larch, pine, or Douglas fir.
