Artificial intelligence as a key driver of innovation

AI is the key buzzword and decisive differentiator in the smart glasses market. The integration of artificial intelligence enables entirely new functions and applications, transforming these devices from simple display glasses into intelligent assistants.

Related to this:

  • The battle for the future of computing – Smart Glasses competition and collaborations: Apple vs. Meta vs. Google vs. SamsungThe battle for the future of computing – Smart Glasses competition and collaborations: Apple vs. Meta vs. Google vs. Samsung

Real-time translation: Overcoming language barriers

One of the most impressive AI features is real-time translation. Google has already presented prototypes that can display route instructions and photos. Particularly impressive is the ability for two people to converse in different languages, with the glasses displaying the translation. Google calls this "subtitles for the real world.".

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses can translate spoken language in real time between English, Spanish, French, and Italian. The translations are either played back through the glasses' speakers or displayed as text on the connected smartphone. If someone speaks Spanish, French, or Italian, users hear the translation in English through the glasses' speakers.

Solos AirGo Vision offers a particularly advanced real-time translation function with SolosTranslate. Travelers can instantly understand conversations in another country, and thanks to the integrated camera, signs, menus, and brochures can also be translated without taking out the phone.

Contextual information and interaction

The new AI features go far beyond simple voice commands. Meta AI on Ray-Ban Smart Glasses can remember things captured by the camera. For example, the glasses can remember the location of a parking space at the airport based on a photo. Voice-activated reminders are also possible. Based on the text the user is currently viewing, the glasses can perform actions such as calling a phone number on a flyer or scanning a QR code.

The new Live AI feature of the Ray-Ban Meta allows the glasses to process visual input in real time and respond to user requests. The glasses can identify objects or provide the user with contextual information about what they see. After the initial question with “Hey Meta,” users can ask follow-up questions without repeating the voice command.

ChatGPT integration and enhanced AI assistants

Solos has integrated ChatGPT directly into its smart glasses. The AirGo Vision smart glasses offer AI for object recognition and live translations. In addition to OpenAI, AirGo Vision also supports Google's Gemini and Claude from Anthropic. The AI assistant can answer questions, provide real-time information, help with scheduling, and even summarize messages—all without taking out your phone.

When used for cooking, the camera can, for example, ask ChatGPT what can be made with the ingredients in the refrigerator, provide recipe ideas, or offer suggestions for improving dishes. The quality of the answers depends heavily on the precision of the input – the more detailed the question, the better the result.

Reebok Smart Eyewear also allows the use of a custom model from ChatGPT via the Lucyd app. This enables users to create training plans or obtain training feedback.

The AI Agent Revolution

AI agents could finally make smart glasses usable. In the world of artificial intelligence, agents that extend large language models (LLMs) with the ability to perform tasks independently are a hot topic. Over the past twelve months, the ability of multimodal AI LLMs to process video, images, and audio in addition to text has improved dramatically.

Meta is definitely interested in AI agents, and Mark Zuckerberg made it clear how keen Meta is to provide a “highly intelligent and personalized AI assistant” to as many users as possible. New agents will not only have eyes and ears, but also contextual awareness of what's happening around them. AI agents running on smart glasses could even engage in unsolicited, interactive conversations with their wearers. For example, they could remind us to buy orange juice when we walk past a store or whisper the names of colleagues walking by on the sidewalk.

Google has a strong interest in this “agent-first” approach. The new smart glasses, which the company first unveiled at Google I/O in May 2024, are powered by an AI agent system called Astra.

Local AI processing is revolutionizing the user experience

The key feature of the AR1+ Gen 1 is its integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which can run small language models directly on the device – without a connection to a smartphone or server. Qualcomm demonstrated this with a prototype pair of glasses running Meta's Llama-3.2-1B language model, suitable for basic AI assistance, visual recognition, and local translation.

The chip therefore supports precisely those AI functions that Meta has already introduced in the Ray-Ban Smart Glasses. According to media reports, Meta is planning a new, higher-quality pair of glasses with a monocle HUD for the end of 2025, which is being developed under the codename “Hypernova” and could be the first to use the AR1+ Gen 1.

Technical specifications and improvements

The AR1+ Gen 1 supports both single- and dual-sided displays with a resolution of up to 1280 x 1280 pixels per eye at 60 Hz. The field of view is designed to be more comfortable thanks to 3DoF (three degrees of freedom) and depth perception in the display. The image output is suitable for notifications, navigation, and simple AI interactions.

The Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform was specifically designed for slim and elegant smart glasses. This platform enables manufacturers to develop lighter and more compact AR glasses. Qualcomm promises improved CPU and GPU performance, as well as longer battery life and support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Xiaomi already uses the Qualcomm AR1 chip in its new AI smart glasses. This technological foundation enables the glasses to perform complex tasks such as scanning QR codes for payments quickly and reliably.

The XR2 Gen 2 platform for immersive experiences

For more demanding applications, Qualcomm offers the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform. Designed for MR and VR technology in a single chip architecture, it offers impressive performance features: 2.5 times the GPU performance compared to the previous generation, 8 times the AI performance, support for up to 3K resolution per eye, and seamless transitions between Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR).

Innovative display technologies: CREAL as a pioneer

CREAL, a Swiss startup, is developing a revolutionary display technology that differs fundamentally from conventional AR displays. The company specializes in light-field micro-displays that bring natural depth of field to digital 3D imaging.

Light-field technology for natural AR experiences

While today's AR displays project a flat image at a fixed focal length, leading to visual conflicts and hindering interactions in personal space, CREAL's light-field display projects true depth. This allows digital content to blend seamlessly into the real world, delivering a natural and accurate visual experience.

CREAL's Clarity display solution offers impressive technical specifications: 40 ppd Angular resolution (at infinity), 1 Mpix Modulator resolution (1:1 ratio), continuous depth resolution, 36° FoV (diagonal) with a path to dual FoV up to 75°, 13 mm effective eyebox, 6 mm exit pupil, 20 ± 3 mm eye relief, 2 million colors and 2000 nits brightness.

Transparent lenses and spectacle integration

CREAL's technology integrates with conventional lenses, delivering corrected vision in both the real and virtual worlds. By using a transparent holographic film applied to the lens to reflect digital light rays to the user's eyes, CREAL ensures seamless integration of its solution into existing eyewear manufacturing and supply chains.

CREAL's lens ensures natural eye contact, unobstructed vision, and a stylish appearance – essential for the everyday acceptance of AR glasses. Its transparency and minimal distracting rainbow effects promote social interaction, while CREAL's display technology adapts to any lens shape for a personalized and fashionable look for the frames.

Challenges and solutions

Despite the impressive progress, fundamental challenges remain, particularly regarding cost, battery life, design and comfort, as well as the critical aspects of data protection and social acceptance.

Related to this:

  • Safer driving thanks to smart glasses? Android Auto hints at a new feature – a head-up display 2.0?Safer driving thanks to smart glasses? Android Auto hints at a new feature – a head-up display 2.0?

Battery life and energy management

Battery life remains one of the biggest technical challenges. While the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses offer up to 4 hours of use on a single charge, plus up to 32 additional hours per fully charged case, newer models show significant improvements. The Oakley Meta HSTN can achieve up to eight hours of typical use and up to 19 hours in standby mode, practically doubling the battery life compared to the Ray-Ban Meta.

Xiaomi's AI smart glasses have achieved an impressive battery life of 8.6 hours, a significant improvement over the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, which only offer four hours. Solo's AirGo Vision promises up to 10 hours of music streaming or 7 hours of talk time and is said to enable more than 2,500 AI interactions.

Data protection and social acceptance

Data privacy is a critical issue, especially with smart glasses that have integrated cameras. Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have an LED on the front that lights up when taking photos, videos, or audio. Following criticism from the Irish Data Protection Commission, the diameter of the LED was increased. Nevertheless, the German data protection authority maintains that it is not always clear to bystanders whether the glasses are recording, for example, in bright sunlight or against the light.

Solos addresses these concerns with a modular design. The company offers frames without cameras for greater privacy, limiting their use to audio support only. The AirGo Vision frame is designed to be easily interchangeable for those who prefer to forgo cameras. The battery and touch sensors are housed in the temple of the glasses and connected to the front of the glasses and lenses via USB-C.

Comfort and design

Modern smart glasses are becoming increasingly lighter and more comfortable. The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer weighs just 49 grams and offers all-day comfort. The Solos AirGo Vision weighs even less at 42 grams, while the ASUS AirVision M1, at 87 grams, is comparatively light despite its more complex technology.

The Even Realities G1 Glasses, which caused a sensation at CES 2025, are now almost indistinguishable from regular glasses. The Halliday Glasses, with their 35-gram design and up to twelve hours of battery life, demonstrate how smart glasses are increasingly resembling traditional eyewear.

The future of smart glasses: an outlook for 2025 and beyond

The development of smart glasses is only at the beginning of a revolutionary transformation. Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that new smart glasses will be launched this year. Meta, together with EssilorLuxottica, will introduce some exciting new products in 2025 that will expand this category and give the glasses new technological capabilities.
