Smartphone development at IFA: These new smart glasses will soon make your phone obsolete

IFA 2025 in Berlin has established itself as the most important showcase for the latest developments in smart glasses. Under the motto "Imagine the future," numerous manufacturers presented their innovative smart glasses concepts that have the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with technology in everyday life. From established Chinese companies to German startups, various players presented their visions for the future of wearable display technology.

Rokid Glasses – The new standard for AR glasses

The Chinese company Rokid caused the biggest stir at the trade fair with its first public presentation of its smart glasses. The Rokid Glasses, which could be tried out live at Booth 169 in Hall 6.2, represent a significant advance in AR technology. Weighing just 49 grams, the glasses combine AI, AR, and a high-quality 12-megapixel camera in an ultralight frame.

The glasses feature two displays with a resolution of 480 × 398 pixels per eye and utilize advanced waveguide display technology. This allows information to be projected directly into the user's field of vision without obstructing natural vision. A special highlight is the integrated Sony display, which displays razor-sharp images on a virtual screen.

The functionality of Rokid Glasses goes far beyond just displaying information. The glasses offer real-time translation in 89 languages, five of which are also available offline. Additionally, integrated object recognition and AI-assisted problem solving enable intuitive interaction with the environment. The premium audio system with two speakers and AI noise cancellation lets you listen to music, answer calls, or check the news without taking out your smartphone.

The success of Rokid Glasses is also reflected in the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Within just 24 hours, the company raised over half a million US dollars, far exceeding its original goal of $18,000. The entry-level model will be offered to backers at a price of $479, while the prescription version will cost $519. First deliveries are planned for November 2025.

The glasses use a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 processor and offer a battery life of 5 to 6 hours of music playback, 4 hours of talk time, or 2 hours of display time. An optional 3,000 mAh charging case allows for more than ten additional charges, ensuring uninterrupted use even on the go.

TCL RayNeo X3 Pro – Next-generation color displays

TCL surprised trade fair visitors with a working prototype of the RayNeo X3 Pro, scheduled for release in October or November 2025. These glasses represent a significant technological advancement, as they are the first of their kind to offer color projection. The optical engine, dubbed "Firefly," can display text and graphics in 16.7 million colors with a peak brightness of 6,000 nits, compared to the typical 1,500 nits of other models.

A distinctive design feature of the X3 Pro is the positioning of the camera and LED in the nose bridge instead of the temples. While this adds some bulk, it allows for a different technical configuration. The glasses feature an integrated audio system for music and phone calls, as well as an AI assistant from Alibaba called Qwen with teleprompter and translation functions.

The price of the TCL RayNeo X3 Pro is expected to be in the region of €1,500, making it about three times more expensive than the Rokid model. This pricing positions the glasses in the premium segment and is aimed at discerning users willing to invest more for color displays and the highest image quality.

The RayNeo X3 Pro is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, the same chip used in Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. This platform provides a solid foundation for AR applications, with most AI functions handled by the paired smartphone to optimize battery life.

L'Atitude 52°N – Berlin design meets functionality

The Berlin-based startup L'Atitude 52°N presented its first collection, the "Departure Collection," at IFA, winning the IFA Innovation Award in the "Best of IFA Next" category. The company takes a different approach than its competitors, focusing on stylish design without an integrated display, similar to the concept of Ray-Ban Meta Glasses.

The collection includes three different models named after European cities: Berlin, with its distinctive navigator style, Milan, with its versatile panto design, and Antwerp, with its sleek rectangular frame. Each model is inspired by the geographical latitude and spirit of its respective city, offering a blend of urban design and functional technology.

A standout feature of the L'Atitude 52°N glasses is their IP65 water resistance, which withstands not only splashes but also jets of water. This significantly exceeds the IPX4 standard of the Ray-Ban Meta, making them suitable for outdoor activities and extreme weather conditions. The charging case with its 200 mAh battery is also water-resistant.

A special innovation is the special goggle strap, which enables a walkie-talkie function via Bluetooth Mesh for up to eight people. This feature allows groups to stay connected even in remote areas without cell reception or internet access, which is particularly interesting for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers.

The smart glasses were funded through a Kickstarter campaign launched parallel to IFA, where they were offered for €220 including a charging case. The startup is targeting a delivery date of December 2025. The company's global headquarters is located in Berlin, underscoring its connection to the German tech scene.

Full-color AR vs. green displays – which standard will prevail?

Sharp – Japanese precision in AR development

Sharp showcased three different models at its booth, which was open to business partners. These included the Dynabook dynaEdge XR1, which is already available in Japan, and two prototypes with different features. Of particular interest is the "Full Color" prototype, which also uses waveguide technology, but with 1080p resolution and color instead of just green.

The company is currently monitoring the global market and has not yet made a decision on a launch outside of Japan. This cautious approach reflects the different market strategies of manufacturers, with some focusing on rapid global expansion while others focus on developing their home markets first.

Rollme NeoView – Affordable AI integration

At IFA, Rollme announced the NeoView AI Smart Glasses as the successor to the AirView glasses. These glasses are positioned as an affordable AI accessory for everyday use and are available for under €80. With an 8-megapixel camera featuring a Sony IMX219 sensor, they can interpolate photos up to 32 megapixels and record videos in 1200p.

The NeoView features electronic image stabilization and a shutter release time of just 0.5 seconds for sharp, blur-free shots. Two noise-canceling microphones are integrated for communication, enabling hands-free calling via Bluetooth. The integrated AI voice assistant is compatible with ChatGPT and DeepSeek and supports voice commands, real-time translation in multiple languages, and object recognition.

The 270 mAh battery offers a standby time of up to 168 hours and between three and six hours of talk time. The glasses are compatible with Android 6.0 and iOS 10.0 or later and charge via a magnetic connector.

Further prototypes and developments

In addition to the main exhibitors, other companies also showcased prototypes and concepts for future smart glasses. Visitors were able to try out already functioning glasses from various manufacturers, and they also spotted further prototypes from brands such as Strong, Lomos, and AOC, which are expected to hit the market in the foreseeable future.

Most vendors focus on similar basic functions such as image capture, music playback, and live translation with ChatGPT integration, with a battery life of around five hours. Despite these technical similarities, tests at the trade fair showed that the implementation of AR functions still has room for improvement at many manufacturers.

  • AI in smart and AR glasses for live translations: Myvu Imiki, Ray-Ban Meta Smart, Rokid, and Solos AirgoAI in smart and AR glasses for live translations: Myvu Imiki, Ray-Ban Meta Smart, Rokid, and Solos Airgo

Technological fundamentals and challenges

Most of the smart glasses showcased at IFA are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 processor. These chipsets are specifically optimized for AR applications and offer a good balance between performance and energy efficiency. Since the computing power in the glasses is limited due to space and battery constraints, many AI functions are handled via the paired smartphone.

Display technology varies depending on the manufacturer and price range. While more basic models rely on monochromatic green displays, premium models like the TCL RayNeo X3 Pro already offer full-color displays with high brightness. Waveguide technology has established itself as the standard, offering a good balance between image quality and power consumption.

An important aspect is the integration of prescription lenses for eyeglass wearers. Rokid solves this with magnetically attached corrective lenses, while other manufacturers rely on clip-on systems or adjustable frames. This adaptability is crucial for market acceptance, as a large portion of potential users rely on visual aids.

Smart Glasses 2025 – from niche product to everyday hit

IFA 2025 clearly demonstrated that smart glasses are transitioning from a niche technology to a mass-market product. With the growing popularity of Meta Ray-Ban glasses and the availability of new competing products, the market is ready for broader adoption. Prices range from an affordable €80 for entry-level models to €1,500 for premium versions with color displays.

The different approaches of the manufacturers reflect different philosophies: While some focus on pure functionality, others concentrate on design and everyday usability. German startups like L'Atitude 52°N are bringing fresh design approaches to a market dominated by Asian manufacturers.

The integration of AI functions is becoming increasingly important, with real-time translation, object recognition, and voice assistants becoming standard features. The challenge lies in implementing these functions reliably and energy-efficiently while simultaneously ensuring data protection and privacy.

The smart glasses showcased at IFA 2025 demonstrate that the technology has reached a turning point. With improved battery life, lighter designs, and practical AI features, smart glasses are increasingly becoming an attractive alternative or complement to smartphones. The variety of approaches showcased at the trade fair suggests that various usage scenarios can be served, from professional AR visualization to stylish lifestyle accessories with smart functions.

The next few years will be crucial for the mainstream adoption of smart glasses. With increasing sophistication of the technology and falling prices, these devices are expected to play an important role in future digital interaction. IFA 2025 demonstrated that the groundwork has already been laid, and the first marketable products are close to widespread availability.
