Shingles are an old form of roofing. In the field of solar energy, this connection technology, also called shingled or overlapping, is used. More precisely, in solar cells. Here, they are divided into smaller cells and laid on top of each other, similar to roof tiles. Therefore, the shingle technique does not require busbars (main conductive traces) and is bonded with silver conductive adhesive. The solar cells themselves take over the function of the busbars.
Silver conductive adhesives are used to create electrical connections. They are used wherever the disadvantages of soft soldering are critical. Compared to soft soldering, silver conductive adhesives do not exhibit migration (the formation of cracks/defects through diffusion).
Shingled cell technology is an innovative interconnection technique. This allows unshaded cells to remain active even when shaded. Shingled cell interconnection technology increases power output by reducing the spacing between cells, thus enabling the integration of more cells than on comparable solar module sizes.
