Red Dead Redemption 2, one of the most anticipated video games of the year, has had a perfect launch. As Rockstar Games, the developer behind Red Dead Redemption, announced last week, the open-world Western-themed game generated $725 million in worldwide sales during its first three days, achieving the second-best launch of all time. Grand Theft Auto V, also from Rockstar Games, broke the billion-dollar mark in three days in 2013 and has sold more than 100 million copies to date.
its press release Rockstar Games refers to it as the "second most successful launch of an entertainment product" of all time, thus evoking comparisons that extend far beyond the gaming world. And indeed, in terms of revenue, the game can even rival the biggest Hollywood blockbusters. As the following graphic shows, the game generated more revenue in three days than the most successful movie launches of all time.
The game has now sold more than 17 million copies since its launch on October 26, as announced by Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, on Wednesday during the release of its quarterly results.
