Podcasts are most often listened to in the evening

Podcasts are a popular medium in Germany, especially late at night. Around 63 percent of all podcast listeners prefer to consume the audio streams in the evening or at night, according to a study by Deloitte and Bitkom . Just under a third of those surveyed said they listen to podcasts early in the morning or at midday.

Even though almost everyone has heard the word podcast, more than a decade after the term was coined, there is still a lot of ignorance and misunderstanding surrounding this medium. Unlike traditional media, podcasts don't have fixed broadcast times. They are also referred to as "on-demand" audio (or video).

Germans are podcast haters

In Germany, podcasts have recently become a genuine alternative to print and video. However, compared to other countries, Germans are discovering their love for the format relatively late. In the US, for example, streamed programs have been a staple of every media outlet for some time. A study by the Reuters Institute for Journalism found that only 22 percent of Germans listen to podcasts regularly. South Korea leads the way, with almost 60 percent of respondents there stating that they tune into an audio or video stream at least once a month. In the United States, the birthplace of podcasting, the figure is still a respectable 33 percent.

Podcasts are still largely falling on deaf ears in Germany in 2019. In a recent survey conducted by the Reuters Digital News Report, only 21 percent of respondents said they had listened to a podcast in the past month. By comparison, the figure was 35 percent in the US, 39 percent in Spain, and even more than half of respondents (53 percent) in South Korea, as the infographic shows. Germans most frequently listen to podcasts on news topics, followed by music, and science and technology.
