Online marketplaces: eBay ranks 5th among digital sales platforms
eBay has been around since 1995. The US company was likely the world's largest online marketplace well into the 2010s. However, it now only ranks fifth, as an eCommerceDB analysis of the top 100 marketplaces shows. Moreover, eBay's gross merchandise volume (GMV) declined in 2019, unlike all the other top five platforms. The clear winner is Alibaba, whose Taobao and Tmall platforms achieved a GMV of almost one trillion US dollars in 2019. Amazon's marketplace came in third with almost 400 billion US dollars, ahead of JD.com (301.9 billion US dollars).

eBay has been around since 1995, and the US company was probably the world's largest online marketplace until the decade. In the meantime, however, it is only good enough for fifth place, as an eCommerceDB analysis of the top 100 marketplaces shows. What's more, eBay's gross merchandise value (GMV) was down in 2019, unlike all the other top 5 platforms. The clear winner is Alibaba, which with its Taobao and Tmall platforms comes to almost one trillion US dollars GMV in 2019.
