Compared to 2009, the economic importance of environmental protection has increased significantly. However, spending has stagnated for the past three years, roughly at the 2019 level. A solar panel mandate could change this.

The solar obligation in some German states is also intended to promote the expansion of open parking lots with solar carports or photovoltaic solar systems on roofs of non-residential buildings, and this will therefore also bring further and new jobs in the field of climate protection.

In 2019, companies in the manufacturing and service sectors in Germany generated €73.6 billion in revenue from goods, construction, and services related to environmental protection. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this represents a 3.1% increase in revenue for the environmental protection sector compared to 2018. The number of people employed in the production of these environmental goods and services was 305,000 (measured in full-time equivalents). The number of "green jobs" thus rose by 5.4% compared to the previous year. Environmental protection is therefore also an important factor for the labor market.

The most economically significant environmental sector was climate protection, with a turnover of €44.1 billion. This was followed by water protection (€10 billion) and air pollution control (€8 billion). Measures to improve energy efficiency and save energy generated €25.1 billion in turnover, while measures to utilize renewable energies generated €17.1 billion.

The majority of environmental protection-related revenues, amounting to €56.5 billion (76.7%), were generated in the manufacturing sector. The most important sectors were mechanical engineering (€22.1 billion), the manufacture of electrical equipment (€6.5 billion), and the manufacture of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts (€5.8 billion). Environmental protection-related revenues totaled €8.0 billion in the construction sector, €8.8 billion in the service sector, and €0.4 billion in other sectors.

Broken down by economic sector, the manufacturing sector employed the most people (212,800, 69.8%) in environmental protection. In the construction industry, 50,500 people were involved in the production of environmental protection goods and services, in the service sector 40,700, and in other economic sectors 1,000.
