LTW is building the first high-bay warehouse for containers at armasuisse – efficiency, safety and sustainability at the highest level.
The Swiss Army relies on state-of-the-art intralogistics technology: Together with Jungheinrich AG, LTW Intralogistics has realized a unique high-bay warehouse for containers – a heavy-duty system that sets new standards in its dimensions, load-bearing capacity and technical equipment.
Challenge: Material diversity and logistical complexity
Until now, the Swiss Army's equipment was spread across numerous locations throughout the country and often stored outdoors. This not only meant a significant logistical effort in assembling the necessary equipment, but also considerable risks from weather conditions – especially for technically sensitive systems. Furthermore, there were demanding requirements for maintenance, fire protection, and the storage of hazardous materials.
Following a comprehensive analysis, armasuisse, the procurement organization of the Swiss Armed Forces, opted for a centralized, sustainable, and efficient solution: an automated high-bay warehouse for containers. This optimizes material flow while simultaneously meeting the highest safety and environmental standards.
Strong together: LTW and Jungheinrich
For the implementation, armasuisse relied on a well-established team: Jungheinrich, as general contractor, took over the overall planning and integration of the intralogistics, while LTW contributed the heart of the system, the storage and retrieval machine. With an impressive payload of 18,000 kg, it is the largest heavy-duty giant that LTW has ever built.
The system ensures that ISO containers, swap bodies, and roll-off containers can be efficiently stored, moved, and retrieved in a minimal space. The automated solution eliminates the tedious relocations that were common with block storage.
The solution: Technology that sets standards
A specially developed large load carrier ensures maximum flexibility, even with non-stackable containers. The robust platforms also serve as spill containment trays and can hold up to 200 liters of liquid – a crucial safety advantage when storing hazardous materials.
The storage and retrieval machine itself features belt technology instead of conventional cables. The belt enables more precise positioning and greater stability during load changes. At the customer's request, a dual drive system was also integrated: duplicated axes ensure continued operation even in the event of a malfunction.
Another highlight is the integrated maintenance concept: Special access gates allow minor maintenance work to be carried out directly in the warehouse. For larger repairs, the storage and retrieval machine transports the affected containers fully automatically to the adjacent workshop.
Efficiency meets sustainability
With the new system, the Swiss Army now has one of the most modern heavy-duty high-bay warehouses in the world. It provides space for 203 containers and swap bodies on five levels. These are kept at a minimum temperature of 5°C and protected from weather and frost.
The result is optimized logistics processes, shorter routes, reduced energy consumption, and maximum protection of sensitive goods.
This project impressively demonstrates how innovation, precision, and partnership are shaping the future of military intralogistics.
