Europe's fastest LTE networks

Anyone who wants reliable and fast mobile internet access shouldn't live in Germany. With an average download speed of only 22.7 Mbps and network coverage of 65.7 percent, the German LTE network is one of the worst in Europe, as a recent comparison by OpenSignal shows.

The internet connections in 36 European countries were examined. The Dutch network leads the pack in speed with 42.1 Mbps, while Norway boasts the highest coverage at 92.2 percent. Bulgaria and Serbia also make the top ten, albeit with comparatively low network coverage of 74 percent and 75.2 percent, respectively, as the graphic illustrates. Germany ranks 32nd in speed and 31st in availability.

LTE availability in Germany

The mobile network in Germany is to be expanded. As Federal Infrastructure Minister Andreas Scheuer announced, an additional half a million households are to be provided with 4G coverage in the next two years.

according to the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) , coverage is currently at or near 100 percent primarily in the city-states. Other federal states lag behind, most notably Saarland with 93.3 percent network coverage, Brandenburg with 93.4 percent, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 93.8 percent.

Summer, sun, beach and smartphone

I'm packing my suitcase and taking with me: smartphone, tablet, and laptop. According to a recent survey by the industry association Bitkom, 73 percent of respondents use their smartphone on vacation. Among 14- to 29-year-olds, that figure rises to 91 percent who wouldn't want to be without their device. Tablets come in second place with 41 percent of respondents, making them considerably less important for a successful vacation. Along with their smartphones, 15 percent of respondents are also packing their selfie sticks.
