Öko-Institut calls for more courage in climate targets: Significantly more is possible in the EU

The EU-wide climate targets for 2030 could be more ambitious – that's the conviction of the Berlin-based think tank. The Agora Institute for Applied Ecology recently published a study concluding that greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union could fall not only by the projected 40 percent, but even by 55 percent.

The background for this study is the European debate surrounding a climate protection target that can – and must – be significantly more ambitious. The aim is to finalize this target by the end of the year and present it at the 2021 climate conference in Glasgow. According to this target, industry and the energy sector should reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 59 to 63% compared to 2005 levels.

Drastic measures prevent

To achieve a more ambitious climate target, the measures leading to it will have to be adapted accordingly. In principle, the climate protection architecture within the EU, as it currently exists, would be ideally suited to revising the targets upwards, says Patrick Graichen of Agora Energiewende. It will be crucial, above all, that EU member states transform their economies towards climate neutrality, because only in this way can it be prevented that the process starts too late and more drastic measures become necessary.
