The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany must accelerate significantly to still achieve the targets set out in the Federal Climate Protection Act. This is illustrated by the graphic based on data from the Federal Environment Agency . Emissions in the energy sector have fallen by 38 percent over the past 20 years. By 2030, they would need to decrease by another 56 percent to meet the German government's targets. Emissions in the other sectors must also fall faster to meet the targets: by 35 percent in industry, 42 percent in buildings, and 43 percent in transport compared to 2021 levels. The agricultural sector generates the lowest emissions and still needs to reduce them by 8.2 percent compared to 2021. However, this also represents an acceleration, as emissions in this sector fell by only 10 percent between 2001 and 2021.
According to the German Federal Environment Agency, the emissions data for 2021 are currently being reviewed by the Expert Council on Climate Issues. The council will submit its assessment of the data within one month. Following this, the relevant ministries will have three months, by law, to submit an immediate action program containing proposals for measures to bring the building and transport sectors onto the intended target path in the coming years. However, the German government is already working on an immediate climate protection program that aims to meet these requirements as comprehensively as possible.
The German Federal Environment Agency points out that the emissions data for 2021 represent the best possible calculation currently available. However, they are nevertheless subject to certain uncertainties due to the limited statistical data available at that time.
English Version: Germany must reduce emissions faster
The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany must pick up speed significantly if the targets set out in the Federal Climate Protection Act are still to be achieved. This is shown in the graphic based on data from the Federal Environment Agency . Emissions in the energy sector have fallen by 38 percent over the past 20 years.
