Autumn is fast approaching. While many people are already mourning the end of summer, others are looking forward to cooler temperatures and cozy evenings on the couch at home. For video store owners, the beginning of autumn has long been the start of the peak season. After all, people like to stay home and watch a movie when the weather is bad. The problem for video store owners is that they no longer even have to leave their homes to do so.
Thanks to Netflix, iTunes, and similar services, video rental stores are now acutely threatened with extinction. Anyone who has access to the world's largest video library at the touch of a button isn't going to bother rummaging through the dusty shelves of a traditional video store. As the following graphic, based on figures from the IVD (German Video Association) , shows, the demise of video rental stores in Germany is already well advanced. Of the 4,300 video rental stores in 2006, only 616 remain today.
