At the beginning of 2018, WeChat reached a significant milestone: over one billion people used the app monthly. Originally launched as a messaging app, the Tencent-owned service now also offers features such as mobile payments and online shopping. The majority of WeChat users reside in China. Attempts to gain a foothold in other countries have so far been limited to reaching Chinese tourists. While the app can be downloaded in Germany, it appears unable to significantly capture market share from its competitors, especially WhatsApp.
