Artificial intelligence, opportunity or risk?

Sixty-two percent of participants in a recent Bitkom Research survey view artificial intelligence (AI) primarily as an opportunity. Nearly one in five respondents even believes that AI is already noticeably changing society. "One reason for this positive development is likely the increasing use of AI applications in everyday life," according to the study's authors. Germans see potential applications in a wide variety of areas. Sixty-eight percent would like AI to support older people. An equal number want doctors to use AI, for example, to assist in diagnostics or in selecting the best possible therapy. And roughly two-thirds would also like to see AI applications in government offices and agencies.

A survey from September showed a different picture: Germans see more risk than benefit in AI

Artificial intelligence will fundamentally change our society; that much is certain. Whether these changes will be positive or negative is a matter of debate among Germans, as a YouGov survey reveals . While 15 percent of respondents believe the benefits of AI outweigh the risks, 26 percent think the opposite. Nearly half of Germans suspect that the risks and harms will balance each other out.

Depending on the age group, attitudes towards artificial intelligence differ only minimally; Baby Boomers are the most doubtful about the usefulness of the technology, while Millennials can at best be described as AI-agnostic.
