The energy transition in Brandenburg is taking concrete form with several large-scale solar energy projects. Three significant projects stand out in particular: a 100-hectare solar park on the A24 near Neuruppin, a 91-hectare project in Vierlinden, and the first German solar park of the Portuguese energy company EDP in Ketzin. These projects underscore Brandenburg's growing importance as a location for large-scale photovoltaic systems and make a significant contribution to the energy transition.

100-hectare solar park on the A24 near Neuruppin

In December 2024, the city council of Neuruppin (Ostprignitz-Ruppin) voted by a majority to amend the land-use plan to pave the way for a new solar park. The planned photovoltaic system is expected to cover an impressive 100 hectares, equivalent to about 140 football fields, and will extend east of the Stöffin district along the A24 motorway.

The project is divided into two sections: For a 30-hectare section, directly bordering the highway and designated as a privileged area for solar park construction, the investor has already received a building permit from the county. This section is approximately 200 meters wide. For the larger section, encompassing 74 hectares and a width of just over 350 meters, the city council has now initiated the necessary amendments to the land-use and development plans.

A subsidiary of Germany's largest agricultural trader is mentioned as a potential investor in a news report by MAZ-Online . However, there are uncertainties due to the parent company's financial difficulties. According to research, this can only refer to BayWa AG and BayWa re AG (BayWa renewable energy).

Timetable and economic importance

Construction of the solar park is not expected to begin before 2027, and it is not anticipated to be operational before 2028. The city of Neuruppin hopes to generate additional revenue through this project. With a projected output of up to 120 megawatts, the solar park could bring in up to €240,000 annually for the city.

Neuruppin already has further experience with solar energy. For example, A24 Energie, a local company, installed a 28 kWp photovoltaic system with an expandable lithium-ion storage system for the "WOMENA" residential project on the Sonnenufer in Neuruppin, commissioned by the Neuruppin municipal utility company.

EnBW solar park in Vierlinden (Görlsdorf)

In the municipality of Vierlinden, in the district of Görlsdorf in the Märkisch-Oderland district, the energy company EnBW is building the "Am 4-Ruthen-Pfuhl Görlsdorf" solar park. The facility covers a total area of ​​approximately 91 hectares, of which about 78 hectares are used directly for energy generation with photovoltaic modules. The solar park is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2025.

Technical details and environmental benefits

This large-scale project utilizes approximately 142,500 solar modules, each with a specific output of about 610 to 615 watts. The plant is expected to produce around 94 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year – enough to supply approximately 35,000 three-person households with clean energy. This electricity generation will save approximately 67,600 tons of CO₂ annually.

EnBW will operate the park for 30 years. Conecon GmbH was commissioned by EnBW to build the solar park, including construction management as well as mechanical and electrical installation.

Economic benefits for the community

A particular advantage for the municipality of Vierlinden lies in the financial contributions. Thanks to the so-called "Solar Euro" in Brandenburg, the municipality can expect annual revenues of approximately €170,000 over the park's operating period. By the end of the project, this is expected to amount to around €5 million. In addition, there will be business tax revenues from the operation of the photovoltaic system.

EnBW emphasizes that, unlike many other project developers, it not only plans and builds its plants, but also operates them itself. The company intends to remain a point of contact for the community and local residents for decades to come.

EDP ​​solar park in Ketzin – a premiere for a Portuguese energy company

The Portuguese energy company EDP, through its subsidiary EDP Renewables, has begun construction of its first large-scale renewable energy project in Germany. The solar park is being built in Ketzin in the state of Brandenburg, west of Berlin.

Project partnership and technical data

The project was developed in collaboration with Kronos Solar EDPR, a German solar developer acquired by EDP in 2022. Kronos Solar's expertise enables EDP to build a strong pipeline of solar projects for the coming years.

EDP ​​Renewables (EDP Renováveis, SA – Madrid) is the subsidiary of the Portuguese energy group Energias de Portugal (EDP) and specializes in renewable energies, especially wind energy and solar energy.

The Ketzin plant has an installed capacity of 87 MWp and is expected to produce around 91 GWh of electricity per year after commissioning. This amount of energy is sufficient to supply more than 28,000 households in the region with electricity while simultaneously avoiding approximately 75,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.

Strategic importance for EDP Renewables

The solar park is scheduled to go online in the second half of 2025. For EDP, the construction in Ketzin marks an important milestone and the first step in an ambitious growth plan for Germany. Duarte Bello, CEO of EDP for Europe, emphasizes: “With more than 5 GWp of large-scale solar projects in various stages of development by the end of the decade, and with a dedicated team for wind energy and other renewable technologies, Germany is becoming one of the most important markets for EDP’s global ambitions.”

EDP's short-term projects in Germany focus on large-scale solar power plants, aiming to install over 400 MWp within the next two years. In the long term, the company plans to expand and diversify its portfolio with onshore wind power and battery storage. By 2030, EDP aims to contribute to Germany's energy transition with over 1 GW of new projects.

Brandenburg is increasingly developing into an important location for solar energy in Germany. The sunny conditions and available land make the state attractive to investors from Germany and abroad.

Other solar projects in Brandenburg

In addition to the three major projects presented, there are other significant solar parks in Brandenburg. For example, the Groß Lubolz solar park, with a peak output of 14.5 megawatts, was commissioned along the railway line in Lübben in the Spreewald region. Approximately 26,000 solar modules were installed on a twelve-hectare site. The expected annual yield is around 15.5 million kilowatt-hours, which corresponds to the annual energy consumption of 4,875 average three-person households and saves approximately 6,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually compared to the German electricity mix.

Another example is the solar park in Karstädt, which Energiekontor AG sold to the CEE Group. With a total installed capacity of around 19 MWp, this park will generate approximately 20 GWh of green electricity annually from its first full year of operation, which corresponds to the average annual electricity consumption of about 6,000 German households.

Financing models and economic advantages

Solar parks bring not only ecological but also economic benefits to the host communities. Through the "solar euro" in Brandenburg and through business tax revenues, the municipalities benefit financially from the operation of the plants. These additional revenues can be used for various municipal projects.

Furthermore, some operators, such as Enerparc, offer residents financing opportunities with attractive interest rates, as examples from other regions show.

International investments are turning Brandenburg into an energy hotspot

Brandenburg is positioning itself as an important location for solar energy in Germany with several large-scale projects. The projects presented in Neuruppin, Vierlinden, and Ketzin make a significant contribution to the energy transition and the reduction of CO₂ emissions.

Investments by international corporations such as EnBW and EDP underscore Brandenburg's growing importance as a location for renewable energies. With its commitment in Ketzin, the Portuguese energy company EDP is making it clear that Germany, and Brandenburg in particular, is a key market for its European investments.

The local added value generated through tax revenues and direct financial contributions to the communities also strengthens public acceptance of the facilities. This development demonstrates that the expansion of renewable energies can combine ecological and economic advantages, thus making a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the region.
