Wind and solar determine the future with infrastructure projects – also a logistical challenge
Published on: July 30, 2021 / Update from: August 4, 2021 - Author: Konrad Wolfenstein
The wind and solar energy industries are booming worldwide as infrastructure projects come online and countries set progressive goals for carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions in the coming decades. New data shows the two popular renewable energies will overtake traditional fossil fuels in just five years.
At the same time, this also creates a logistical challenge. Many companies in the wind and solar need to optimize their processes along their supply chains - the supply chain needs to be designed to be more forward-looking and digital in order to meet future requirements.
Suitable for:
- World logistics – resilient logistics
- Smart Logistics – Reach your destination faster with smart logistics
- Horizontal carousel warehouses as alternative storage solutions for automation
a new report from the International Energy Agency, current global wind and solar power generation capacity will double by 2025, reaching nearly 2,400 gigawatts. This would exceed both coal and natural gas capacities in the world, which are forecast to be around 2,100 and 2,000 gigawatts respectively by 2025. According to current data from 2019, the combined capacity of coal and natural gas is more than three times the capacity of wind and solar energy in the world.
Traditional fuels such as coal and natural gas fell sharply in value in 2020, reflecting a collapse in global demand due to COVID-19 restrictions. Coal, which had already shown a declining trend at the beginning of the year, was hit hardest by the global decline in electricity consumption. Most countries are rapidly exiting the coal industry in favor of wind, solar and natural gas, and it shouldn't be too long before the black rock is officially gone from most major power supplies.
Wind and solar energy, on the other hand, are quickly filling the gap left by coal. The two industries are experiencing tremendous growth, even during the pandemic, and ongoing news of carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions plans in countries around the world are only driving their adoption further.
