Growth of the global wind industry
The wind industry is the fastest growing energy sector in the world. In 2020 alone, the output of newly installed wind turbines was around 93 gigawatts. Just 20 years ago, only around 6.5 gigawatts were connected to the global power grid in one year, as the graphic based on GWEC data shows. On the one hand, this is due to the technical development of increasingly efficient wind turbines, and on the other hand, more and more countries are following the global trend towards renewable energies. The newly installed capacity increased at an annual growth rate of around 22 percent from 2001 to 2010. However, growth slowed somewhat in the following years. China accounts for the largest share of newly installed wind turbines - the People's Republic was responsible for around half of all newly built onshore and offshore wind turbines in 2020. The most important European markets are Germany and Great Britain. The two nations are primarily active in the offshore sector. Together they operate around 51 percent of all offshore wind turbines.

On the one hand, this is due to the technical development of increasingly efficient wind turbines; on the other hand, more and more countries are also moving with the global trend towards renewable energies. For example, from 2001 to 2010, newly installed capacity increased at an annual growth rate of around 22 percent. In the following years, however, growth slowed down again somewhat.
