Besides urbanization, supply gaps in rural areas are also a new challenge for logistics. The speed and flexibility with which goods flow can be managed are crucial. Many interesting approaches exist for last-mile logistics, but a standardized application and infrastructure are likely still a long way off. At the same time, there is the challenge of emission-free, autonomous power supply, which the EU has set as a goal for 2050 with its Green Deal. A look at Japan can show what is still possible if there is a will. The concept of unified commerce is also still in its infancy, even though everyone is still talking about omnichannel and its possibilities. The power of digital platforms has not yet permeated everyone. For many, it is simply no longer possible to keep track of all the developments. The world of logistics has become breathtakingly complex. But complex questions often have surprisingly simple answers.

Complex questions often have surprisingly simple answers

Automation is only part of the solution. Structures and management must also be examined. But above all, it is important that humans do not lose control and oversight.

Networked distribution centers – Intralogistics 4.0

Technological progress doesn't stop at intralogistics. Due to the rapid development in the IT sector, new concepts and solutions will be needed in the coming years to enable even more efficient handling of ever-increasing order volumes. However, this is just the beginning of a development that will, in the medium term, Intralogistics 4.0 , which we define as the complete IT networking of warehouse systems.

Nowadays, there are primarily three factors that significantly influence and accelerate developments in logistics.

Japan is already working on the future of tomorrow

Japan is already working on the future of tomorrow – @shutterstock | Alexander Limbach

In the 20th century, Japan's demographic development was driven by urbanization. During the 1980s, government policy promoted the development of new urban structures outside the major cities and supported regional centers in attracting young people to live and work there. These towns offered those coming from the surrounding areas a familiar environment, lower living costs, shorter commutes, and generally a more relaxed lifestyle than in the major cities.

By international standards, the Japanese have a high standard of living, and almost 90% of the population consider themselves to be middle class.

Japan is now an urban society where only 5% of the workforce is employed in agriculture. Many farmers supplement their income with part-time jobs in nearby cities.

Planning a solar and photovoltaic open-field system or open-field system

Do you own a property and don't know how to use it economically?

The more sealed the surface, the more ideal it is for ground-mounted photovoltaic systems. The less agricultural land is suitable for ecological purposes (low yield), the more suitable a ground-mounted solar system becomes. Incidentally, there are also interesting combinations of agrivoltaics and photovoltaics that are applicable to both ecological and photovoltaic applications without negatively impacting natural resources.

Soil points are crucial . They are a key indicator for assessing soil quality. As early as 1934, soil and arable land quality were officially recorded in the 'German Soil Map' ( DGK 5 Bo ) as part of the Reich soil assessment  . Each federal state regulates independently which areas are suitable for agriculture and at what soil point level an area can no longer be approved for the construction of a solar park .

Sensible use of already sealed surfaces or properties

Existing sealed surfaces typically already serve a purpose for which they were originally constructed. Examples include company buildings, warehouses, production facilities, and company parking lots. Photovoltaics can profitably expand their function as an additional source of revenue or utilize them as an autonomous power supply to gain a competitive edge. This addresses the anticipated higher costs associated with environmental regulations, peak load management (infrastructure and grid stability), and CO2 emissions.

The CO2 balance, also called greenhouse gas balance or CO2 footprint, will gain more decisive influence in the future if it is subject to tax and cost-related surcharges in the CO2 labeling of goods and services.

Unified Commerce: Well-equipped for No-Line Commerce

Unified Commerce No-Line Commerce No-Border Commerce

Besides smoothly functioning intralogistics with optimized storage conditions, the efficient integration of IT processes is an absolute prerequisite for no-line commerce, which places the customer experience at the absolute center of all efforts by eliminating any distinction between individual sales channels, whether online, offline, or hybrid models. This is precisely what differentiates no-line commerce from older approaches like multi-channel or omnichannel, because with a no-line solution, the customer shouldn't even notice which channel they are using to interact with the retailer. To achieve this, identical information must be provided across all sales channels.

In no-line commerce, there are therefore no silos in logistics, IT, or marketing/sales, only a single, boundless "one." To enable customers to experience the "endless aisle," seamless integration of IT and logistics structures is essential. Efficient digital processes play a crucial role here, as they ensure that all products are always available to the customer across all channels and that the retailer maintains a clear overview. To leverage this competitive advantage, retailers must ensure that all relevant information about current inventory and the location of individual items—whether in the warehouse, the store, en route to the next touchpoint, or to the customer—is accessible at any given second.

Digital platforms are revolutionizing the global economy

Digital platforms are revolutionizing the global economy

The global economy is booming, and most companies are enjoying full order books. However, this growth isn't uniformly rapid across all sectors. For the past few years, IT companies that have undergone digital transformation have been particularly successful, benefiting from above-average growth. Often, they don't own their own machinery or other physical production factors, but rather derive their strength from facilitating services between suppliers and customers. Their efficient performance is based on powerful platforms through which users exchange services. E-commerce giants like Amazon and Alibaba are prime examples, being among the biggest developers and beneficiaries of the platform economy. This economy has the potential to fundamentally transform the economy of tomorrow. Those who fail to adapt risk being left behind.

Last Mile Logistics – Facts You Should Know – Interesting for Logistics Professionals, E-commerce Companies, and Consumers

Last Mile Logistics – Image: Xpert.Digital & aurielaki|shutterstock.com

Courier, express, and parcel services (CEP) primarily focus on fulfilling the last mile. In order for the last mile to be achieved at all, the first mile, in addition to the middle mile, plays a crucial role in the rapid delivery of goods and products.

A company's geographical and strategic location in relation to its target group and customers is a crucial success factor in competition and market share. If, even in the first mile, goods collection by courier, express, and parcel (CEP) services is not carried out on time, "same day delivery" concepts and similar services are already at risk before they have even begun.

Last-mile logistics is the major challenge of a successful supply chain, meaning right up to the last mile and second when the customer holds their goods in their hands. But it's not just that.

The internet has increased the possibilities for delivering goods from anywhere in the world to anywhere else in the world. The higher the level of service provided by the digital and physical infrastructure, the greater the expectations of both customers and suppliers.
