🥨🍻 Experience the Oktoberfest like never before: Oktoberfest 2024 in the virtual world

🎉🎡 With Virtual Reality at Oktoberfest: An innovative experience from the Munich company Connected Reality

Oktoberfest 2024 in Munich will be taken to a whole new level through the use of virtual reality (VR) and other extended reality (XR) technologies. Thanks to the advanced developments of the Munich-based company Connected Reality, visitors have the opportunity to explore the festival virtually for the first time before the official opening on September 21st. This digital experience offers an immersive and exciting way to experience the “Wiesn” in a way that has never been possible before.

🌐 The virtual Oktoberfest: A new dimension of the Oktoberfest experience

The digitization and virtualization of major cultural events is a trend that has become increasingly important in recent years. The traditional Oktoberfest in Munich is also being opened up to new target groups through the use of modern technologies. The development of connected reality, which brings the experience of an Oktoberfest tour into virtual space, is particularly impressive. The virtual tours were designed to be suitable for people who already know Oktoberfest as well as for those who want to experience it for the first time.

🎠 Virtual Tour with Kids: A family-friendly discovery

A particularly exciting innovation is the guided virtual tour, which shows users the festival site from the perspective of two children, Felix and Leah. This tour allows you to discover the Oktoberfest grounds in a playful way while the two children guide the spectators through the various attractions. These include:

Rides on the Ferris wheel, bumper car ghost train and slide

These iconic Oktoberfest rides are recreated in detail and realistically, allowing users to feel the atmosphere of a real visit.

At the end of the article you can see two brief insights:

  • VR experience with the Ferris wheel at Oktoberfest
  • VR ride with the ghost train at Oktoberfest

🤟 Explanations in sign language

Leah, one of the two protagonists of the tour, offers explanations in sign language, making the experience more inclusive.

💬 English version for international guests

In addition to the German version, an English version was also developed to make the experience accessible to a wider, international audience.

The main goal of this tour is to give the opportunity to experience Oktoberfest to those people who cannot be physically present due to geographical, health or other restrictions. The combination of childlike curiosity and innovative technology creates an experience that is not only informative, but also entertaining and interactive.

⚙️ Technical aspects and challenges: The hurdles of virtual reality

The use of virtual reality not only brings with it opportunities, but also some challenges. The full VR experience requires specialized equipment, including a VR headset and two controllers. This represents a technical hurdle because not every household has the necessary hardware.

Another aspect that must be taken into account in VR applications is the so-called “motion sickness”. VR newbies in particular may have difficulty orienting themselves in the virtual world at the beginning. Fast movements or rotating objects, such as carousels, can cause nausea. For this reason, particularly fast rides that could cause severe disorientation were excluded from the program.

Nevertheless, the technology also offers great potential. While the first steps may seem unfamiliar, most users quickly adapt to the virtual environment, resulting in a pleasant and engaging experience.

🔮 The future of the Oktoberfest: Virtual experiences as a complement to reality

The introduction of VR and XR at Oktoberfest 2024 marks a significant step in the further development of cultural events. By creating a virtual space, Oktoberfest is made accessible to a much larger target group than would ever be possible through a purely physical visit. This is particularly beneficial for international guests who may not have the opportunity to travel to Munich but still want to experience a piece of Bavarian tradition.

The virtual Oktoberfest experiences are not only a means of increasing anticipation of a real visit, but they also open up new opportunities for participation. This means families, children, people with disabilities and international guests can experience Oktoberfest in a way that was previously unthinkable. VR technology expands the spectrum of what can be experienced and makes Oktoberfest a global event that has an impact far beyond the borders of Munich.

However, it remains to be seen how well the virtual experience can convey the real Oktoberfest feeling. The smell of freshly roasted almonds, the swaying in the beer tent and the hustle and bustle on the festival site are difficult to replicate digitally. Nevertheless, the virtual Oktoberfest could become a permanent addition to the traditional festival in the future and expand the experience for a large number of people who would otherwise not have access to it.

🏅 A successful combination of tradition and innovation

Oktoberfest 2024 impressively shows how tradition and modern technology can go hand in hand. Connected Reality's virtual reality experiences offer an exciting and innovative way to rediscover the largest folk festival in the world. The virtual tours and interactive games make the festival accessible to a global audience, without losing the importance of the physical visit.

In the coming years, this symbiosis of tradition and digitalization could intensify further. Perhaps there will be even more immersive experiences in the future that will make Oktoberfest one of the most popular festivals in the world, even virtually. This year's innovations are just the beginning - they offer a first foretaste of the potential that lies in connecting the real and virtual worlds. So it remains exciting to see how Oktoberfest will develop further and what role digital technology will play in it.

🎪 The first inclusive virtual reality project for Oktoberfest: vr4kids

🎡 Oktoberfest in Munich is known worldwide for its exuberant atmosphere, traditional beer tents, rides and the gathering of people from all parts of the world. But what if this festival were accessible to even more people, regardless of their physical or social limitations? The innovative project “vr4kids” asked itself exactly this question and answered it with a groundbreaking idea.

🌍 A new era of inclusion: The “vr4kids Oktoberfest”

The “vr4kids-Oktoberfest” makes the Munich Oktoberfest accessible through virtual reality (VR) for children and young people who were previously unable to take part in the celebrations due to disabilities or social disadvantages. This project is a first – it is the first of its kind to focus on inclusion at Oktoberfest.

“Our goal is to create emotional and unforgettable experiences for all children, no matter what challenges they have to overcome in life,” emphasizes Christoph Ostler, the initiator of “vr4kids” and virtual reality expert.

With the help of VR glasses, children with disabilities or from socially disadvantaged backgrounds can now immerse themselves in the world of Oktoberfest. You can experience the festival virtually as if you were there yourself. The project enables children who are physically unable to visit the festival to still experience the typical attractions and the special atmosphere of the Oktoberfest up close.

🐾 Leah and Felix: Virtual companions through the Oktoberfest

What is special about this VR experience are the protagonists Felix and Leah, two virtual characters who accompany the children through the Oktoberfest. Together with them, they take a virtual journey across the festival grounds. From the ghost train, which sends a pleasant shiver down the children's spines, to the view from the Löwenbräu festival tent - the children can experience the festival from a completely new perspective. The 360° experience is so realistic that the children feel like they are right in the middle of the action. “It’s as if you were standing right on the fairground and soaking up the atmosphere,” says Ostler, describing the effect of virtual reality.

💡 Inclusion through technology: breaking down barriers and enabling participation

At a time when technological innovations are increasingly determining our everyday lives, virtual reality offers an enormous opportunity to break down barriers. Particularly in the area of inclusion, VR is a powerful tool for connecting people who are often excluded due to physical, sensory or social limitations. “Virtual reality offers us the opportunity to create experiences that bring all children and young people together, regardless of their individual abilities,” continued Ostler.

By participating in Oktoberfest virtually, children not only experience fun and entertainment, but they also gain the feeling of being part of a community that might otherwise have excluded them. This strengthens self-esteem and promotes social interaction.

Peter Berger, CEO of Sparda-Bank Munich, emphasizes: “Every child has the right to unforgettable experiences, regardless of their personal situation. With vr4kids we achieve exactly that. Children are directly involved in the experiences and the technology allows us to create a connection that goes far beyond the screen.”

🤝 Strong together: Supporters of the project

However, the “vr4kids Oktoberfest” would not be possible without the support of important partners. One of the first sponsors of this project is Allianzberatung- und Vertriebs-AG. She recognized the potential of this idea early on and is committed to ensuring that inclusion does not remain just a theoretical concept, but is put into practice. “We see this project as an opportunity to assume social responsibility and actively shape new approaches to inclusion,” explains the alliance.

The city of Munich, represented by the Department of Labor and Economy, also supports the project as part of the “Promote vr4kids inclusion” initiative. This initiative aims to enable participation for children and young people who are often excluded due to disabilities or social disadvantages. The close cooperation between vr4kids and the city of Munich ensures that as many children as possible can benefit from this unique offer.

🤲 The Deaf Association of Munich and the Surrounding Area eV: A strong partner

Particularly noteworthy is the collaboration with the Munich and Surrounding Area Deaf Association, which has been an important partner in the project from the start. “The idea of vr4kids to make the Oktoberfest virtual and barrier-free accessible to all children is a completely new and innovative approach. We support this idea wholeheartedly,” said a representative of the Deaf Association.

VR technology offers special opportunities, especially for deaf and hard of hearing children. You can experience Oktoberfest visually and immerse yourself in a world that remains acoustically closed to you. This is further proof that VR technology can overcome barriers and open new horizons.

🚀 Looking into the future: More projects and training offers

The “vr4kids Oktoberfest” is just the beginning. Those responsible at vr4kids are already planning further projects that are not just limited to Oktoberfest. “We started with experiences, but the next projects will include very special offers in the areas of training and education,” reveals Ostler.

This is about not only creating experiences, but also offering education and training that helps children and young people develop important skills. “We offer interested companies the opportunity to work with us to realize unique projects in the area of inclusion,” adds Ostler. This could, for example, take the form of virtual training programs that provide children and young people with new learning content in a safe, virtual environment.

🌟 A future for all children

The “vr4kids Oktoberfest” is an outstanding example of how technology can be used to break down barriers and enable participation. It shows that inclusion is not just a theoretical ideal, but can also be implemented in practice with the right ideas and support.

The collaboration between companies, organizations and the city of Munich makes it clear that an inclusive future is possible for all children. Virtual reality plays a key role in enabling children and young people – regardless of their individual challenges – to have unique and unforgettable experiences together.

“Every child deserves to experience the world in all its diversity,” summarizes Peter Berger. The “vr4kids Oktoberfest” is a step in the right direction, and it will be exciting to see what further opportunities the combination of technology and inclusion will open up in the future.
