The connection between Vcommerce (Virtual Commerce), Ecommerce (Electronic Commerce) and physical retail continues to advance and is decisively shaping the landscape of modern commerce. There is an increasing trend towards merging these different sales channels to provide the customer with a seamless shopping experience. This development has gone through several stages, from simple multi-channel strategies to omnichannel models to more innovative approaches such as no-border commerce and unified commerce.

As part of multi-channel trading, companies still largely operated in isolation on different platforms. Online and in-store purchases were two separate experiences, and there was little integration of data or customer behavior between the two.
