It is absolutely crucial to the success of a video game platform to have support from the developing community. After all, what use is the best hardware if the best games are developed for other platforms? A survey from UBM, the company behind the annual Game Developers Conference , highlights which platforms developers currently consider to be the most important and which ones they are working on.

Unsurprisingly, the PC continues to lead the way when it comes to developer support. 66 percent of the approximately 4,000 developers surveyed are currently working on a game that will be published on PCs. In addition, 60 percent of those surveyed consider PCs to be one of the most interesting gaming platforms. The PlayStation 4 is slightly less popular than PCs and remains a top priority for developers. 38 percent of those surveyed consider Sony's bestseller to be one of the most interesting platforms for 2019 and 31 percent are currently working on PlayStation games. Nintendo's popular new hybrid console, the Switch, is also enjoying strong developer interest this year, even beating out the aforementioned PlayStation 4. However, fewer developers are already working on games for the Switch, probably due to the smaller installed base.

In addition to the “traditional” platforms, PCs and consoles, mobile devices are increasingly taken as full play equipment. 38 percent of those surveyed are currently working on cell phone games and 33 percent consider them one of the most exciting platforms on which work will be carried out in 2019. In view of the large installed basis and the relatively low effort in developing smartphone games, it is understandable that developers try to take this opportunity.
