Over 6,000 container ships cross the world's oceans every day, transporting the majority of goods traded worldwide. According to the shipping information portal Alphaliner, this fleet moves around 24 million standard containers (TEU) to their destination port.
As the graphic shows, the largest container ship fleet is headquartered in small European Denmark. Following the example of its Viking ancestors, APM-Maersk controls a powerful sea fleet of 653 active ships - only today it is less martial and more capitalistic. The second most container ships have their headquarters in a country that does not have direct sea access. The Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) was founded in Naples in 1970, but today runs its operations and around 552 ships from mountainous Geneva.
