Augmented reality in the digital-physical world
Published on: April 20, 2021 / Update from: October 27, 2021 - Author: Konrad Wolfenstein
The augmented reality in Augmented Reality (AR) technology integrates digital information with the physical environment, live and in real time. By adding graphics, sounds, haptic (tactile) feedback to the natural world as it exists, AR can simulate real life with a superimposed image or animation using a mobile device's camera or an AR headset combine. As part of the broader extended reality (XR) industry, the size of the global AR market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
Suitable for:
- The Power of Xtended/Extended Reality – Short insight
- Extended Reality potentials and areas of application
Mobile augmented reality
An important segment of the market is mobile AR, which takes advantage of the large number of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices that the global population owns or has access to. In 2021, the number of mobile AR users is expected to exceed 800 million and increase to 1.73 billion by 2024. Growth is expected in both enterprise and consumer segments, including digital AR experiences. One of the most famous examples of this is Pokémon Go, the location-based AR mobile game whose in-app purchases account for a large portion of mobile AR spending among consumers.
Headsets and augmented reality applications
AR is made possible by devices such as headsets and glasses. Sales of AR glasses are expected to reach 410,000 units in 2021 and increase to 3.9 million by 2024, with purchases for industrial use experiencing a dramatic increase. Corporate spending on AR glasses is expected to grow from just over $2 billion in 2021 to nearly $12 billion in 2024. AR headset providers such as Microsoft, Magic Leap and Vuzix continue to innovate and develop devices that help support the increasing adoption of AR across a range of industries.
Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) market size worldwide from 2021 to 2024 (in billion US dollars)
Leading applications of immersive technologies in smart cities according to XR/AR/VR/MR industry experts in the US in 2020
Immersion describes the effect caused by a virtual reality (VR) environment that allows the user's awareness of being exposed to illusory stimuli to recede into the background to such an extent that the virtual environment is perceived as real. If the degree of immersion is particularly high, it is also referred to as “presence”.
In contrast to passive, filmic immersion, virtual reality allows interaction with the virtual environment, which means that a significantly higher intensity of immersion can be achieved.
One speaks of an immersive virtual environment if the user is able to interact directly with it. In contrast to this is non-immersive virtual reality, e.g. B. in a 3D CAD system that is operated on a PC.
