Stuttgart has the fastest network
The Stuttgart LTE network offers a download speed of 34.8 Mbps. This was the result of a measurement by OpenSignal in the largest German cities. Düsseldorf and Leipzig follow in second and third place. The Berlin 4G network only makes it to seventh place. The German financial capital, Frankfurt, performed worst. Overall, mobile internet in major German cities is significantly better than the national average. Here it is only enough for 29th place out of 69 countries considered, see also below.

Germany needs more download speed
A current report from OpenSignal the average download speed of mobile Internet connections in Germany at 19.3 Mbps. That's just enough for 29th place out of 69 countries considered. South Korea is the leader, followed by Norway and Singapore. An expansion of the mobile communications infrastructure seems to be urgently needed. However, there is little to suggest that anything will happen here soon. The expansion of LTE in this country got off to a comparatively late and slow start and it is currently not expected that things will be any different with the 5G network expansion.

5G is on the verge of a breakthrough
The LTE network (4G) in Germany is not yet a decade old and a new mobile communications standard is already in the starting blocks. 5G - one of the big topics at MWC this year - is said to have a data rate 100 times higher than today's 4G networks - that would be up to 10,000 MBit/s. But it will probably still be a while before the new mobile technology arrives on consumers' smartphones. For 2019, the current Ericsson Mobility Report assumes there will only be four million 5G mobile connections worldwide. But then everything should happen very quickly: by 2023 there should be around a billion 5G mobile connections - 118 million of them in Western Europe.
